VHS Movie Reviews of WWE King Of The Ring 1998 - Off With Their Heads [VHS]Movie Review: "What he calls hell, I call home" Summary: 3 StarsKing of the Ring was a pretty good ppv during the attitude era but of course it is only remembered for the "Foley being thrown off the cell by the Undtertaker" moment. It also had a pretty solid KOR tournament and a good main event. Trust me, theres more than just the Hell in the Cell match on here.
1. Six Man Tag
Kaientai vs. Tanka Minchioku & Headbangers
Nice opnener. Tanka and the Headbangers pulled off some good triple teamed moves. It did its job to get the crowd all rowded up for the night. 3/5
2. Semi-Finals
Jeff Jarrett w/ Tennessee Lee vs. Ken Shamrock
These two didn't really mesh all that well with each other. A few moves were executed. Of course there was some interference from TN Lee. Not a whole much happening here. 2.5/5
3. Semi-Finals
The Rock vs. Dan "the Beast" Severn
This match was defiantly better than the Shamrock/Jarrett match but not a whole lot too better. This is also where the whole chest protector on d lo came from which he frogsplashed Severn with it on and costed him the match. 3/5
4. Al Snow & "head" vs. Too Much
This match was nothing but entertainment especially with the King being the special referee. Nothing really good from here except for a couple of good laughs. It did had a ending which was quite clever though. 1.5/5
5. Owen Hart vs. X-Pac w/ Chyna
X-pac really took some hard blows here. The in ring action was good and so was the outside action. The closing mintues of this match was really the most exciting parts. Very good match up between these too. It had a few good shockers as well. 4/5
6. Tag Team Championship
New Age Outlaws w/ Chyna vs. The New Midnight Express w/ Jim Cornette
Average tag match right here. It was interesting to see Bart and Billy squaring off against each other. Nothing all that but it was fairly decent. 3/5
7. Finals of the King of the Ring Tournament
The Rock vs. Ken Shamrock
Pretty good match and I'd have to say this is one of the better matches these two has had that year. Rock would try to work on Shamrock's hurt ankle and even applying some wrestling holds on him. The Rock would also have a tossle with Triple H who was at ringside help calling the match. Good final match in the tournament. 3.5/5
8. Hell in the Cell Match
Undertaker vs. Mankind
Defiantly one of the greatest moments in the annals of professional wrestling happened here. It would start up on the cell where Taker would throw Foley off the top and through the announce table, and to be perfectly honest I thought the match was legitamy over right there. The match would really get under way once Foley got chokeslammed through the top of the cell and into the ring. I was surprised when Foley countered some of Taker's moves. Foley even applied the mandiable claw on Taker. Thumb tacks would also get introduced at one point in the match. Pretty good ending. Just for the history value of this match defiantly makes it a 5 star match. Just pure unbelieveable. 5/5
9. First Blood for the WWE Title
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Kane w/ Paul Bearer
This match also delivers just like the hell in the cell did. It started out very good with some reversals and brawling. The cell would eventually get lowered and surround the ring. It had some nice action to take place around the enterance area. Kane takes a hard shot with a metal fan. Taker and Foley would come out and get involved. The closing moments of this match also made it more exciting to watch. Great title match to end an unbelieveable night. 4.5/5
King of the Ring is with out a doubt remembered for the Hell in the Cell but that aint the only thing to see in this one. It had a good title match and a decent KOR tournament. You will defiantly get more than just the Hell in the Cell moment.
Movie Review: Tournament, Hell In A Cell & First Blood, All In One Night Summary: 4 StarsAnother old tape that I found in my collection with the 1998 King of the Ring. This was the first time in the event's history that would begin as a pattern for the future King of the Ring events in which the tournament itself would be nothing more than a filler considering everything else that was going on in the WWF at the time.
Headbangers & Taka Michinoku vs Kaientai. This was a fun opening contest as the Headbangers add some comedy while Taka works well with the rest of the members of Kaientai. And for those keeping track, this would be one of the last times that Taka would face this group as he would join them in the summer.
Ken Shamrock vs Jeff Jarrett. The first match of the semi finals of the KOTR tournament. These two just didn't "click" well together but the match was short so for that, it made it more watchable than what it really was.
The Rock vs Dsn Severn. This is the second match of the semi finals & just like the first one, these two didn't mesh well together either as Severn never really adapted to the WWF style with only highlight being D'Lo Brown's appearance wearing something that would become a trademark of his following this match.
Al Snow & "Head" vs Too Much w/Special Referee Jerry "The King" Lawler. The stipulation to this match was that if Al Snow & "Head" win the match, then Al Snow would get his meeting with Vince McMahon & be rehired in the WWF but if he loses, then he is out of the WWF. This was really just a glorified handicap match & other than a few moments like Lawler ordering the head, this was just really dull & the crowd let them know it was.
X-Pac vs Owen Hart. The continuation of the war between DX & The Nation continued here as this was the best match that the crowd had seen since the opener. These two worked well together which made this a good match to with X-Pac taking a few bumps on the outside with the announce tables & cameos from Chyna, Mark Henry & Vader adding to the contest instead of taking away from it.
WWF Tag Team Champions New Age Outlaws vs New Midnight Express. For those that don't remember, this version of the Midnight Express consisted of Bob Holly & Bart Gunn with Jim Cornette as their manager. This was a good average tag team match with moments like the exchanges between Billy & Bart along with the ending where Chyna played a role in which Cornette would like to forget...along with every other man that watched it.
The Rock vs Ken Shamrock. The finals of the KOTR tournament but before the match, Triple H did some commentary for this match & boy was he ever speaking his mind in this one along with a confrontation with The Rock that was a mini-tease for their fued following this event. This was the best match of the tournament & this match made up for their disappointing WrestleMania match earlier in the year as they told a good story of both men not being able to put the other down no matter what they did to them before it was The Rock's frustration that cost him the victory.
Hell In A Cell: The Undertaker vs Mankind. This is the most famous match to come out of this event & the match that put Mick Foley into immortality. This started on top of the Cell with Taker & Mankind brawling before Taker through Mankind off the top of the cage through the announce table that even caused JR to screw "Good God, That KILLED HIM!!". From there, the match was stopped for a few minutes before Foley got back up & went back to the top only to be chokeslammed through the Cell along with other moments like the thumbtacks coming into play (including Mick getting chokeslammed onto them), Taker getting busted open & Terry Funk getting chokeslammed right out of his shoes.
First Blood: WWF Champion Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kane. Kane's own stipulation to this match was that if he didn't win the title, then he would set himself on fire. This was exactly what you expected it to be in which it was a brawl with the Cell actually coming down on numerous occasions including almost dropping on Austin's neck & Kane strandling off the cage door while he was choking Austin. And believe it or not, Mankind & Undertaker would join the match but it was one mistake that Taker did that not only began the storyline of the "Highway To Hell" but also set the standard for the second First Blood match a year later between Austin & Taker.
Overall, this event got off to a slow start as the tournament final was the best of the tournament & the Al Snow "match" (if you even want to call it that) while it was the other matches that saved this show along with Hell In A Cell being the most memorable so I would give this one a look if you can find it at a reasonable price.
Movie Review: king of the ring 1998 is a 5 star ppv Summary: 5 Stars80-76%-perfect
75-71%-awsome
70-66%-good
65-61%-poor
60-56%-awful
1. The Headbangers & Taka Michinoku v. Kaientai- This was an above average tag match and accualty surprised me as being ggod. The head bangers have always had alot of potential and i think they carrie the load here. The headbangers controll alot of the match which gets kind of boring but than Taka Michinoku gets the hot tag and cleans house and some good near falls for an okay match. WInners Taka Michinoku v. Kaientai. Match Rating 7/10.
2. Ken Shamrock v. Jeff Jarrett Semi-Final match for the king of the ring- This was a decnt match but the ending really was wierd and not used corect. It starts out with back and forth action and than jerret issolates shamrock and slows down the pace. Ken fights back hits a few big moves but than out of no were gets on the ankle lock and jerret tps out after controlling 90% of the match. Okay i guess. WInner Ken Shamrock. Match Rating 6/10.
3. Dan "The Beast" Severn v. The Rock Semi-Final for the king of the ring- I would say that this was better than the shamrock match. I really liked the rock back in the day he played his role really well and tried to be heel. It was abovious who was going to win but the match itself was okay. Winner the rock. Match Rating 7/10.
4. Al Snow & Head v. Too Much- You talk about a bad match it is here. Sure the head thing was funny the first few time you saw it but after a while it got really old. It was boring and dumb with al talking to the head for most of this match. Reminded me of boogyman vs. JBL at the royal rumble. Winners too much. Match Rating 2/10.
5. X-Pac V. Owen Hart- This was a great match. It was just a few months before owne died rip and they put on a good match. More of a wrestling match which x-pac was not used to but it seemed like he caught on and flowed throguh the match pretty well. Good match. Winner X-Pac. Match Rating 7.5/10.
6. New Age Outlaws (Champions) V. The New Midnight Express for the wwe tag team titles- This was a decent tag match. Not a whole lot to sya about this match excpet that it is average and just good tag wrestling. Winners and still wwe tag team chmap the new age outlaws. Match Rating 6.5/10.
7. The rock vs. Ken Shamrock in the king ring finals- This is the match that really surprised me winner wise. I would say that this was better than there wretlemania match but not as good as there royal rumble. Good soild wrestling matcha nd this was one of the better macthes that shamrock had lots of near falls and the rock sold the ankle lock great. Winner Ken Shamrock. Match Rating 8/10.
8. Mankind vs. Undertaker hell in a cell - This is one of the most brutal macthes that you will ever see. How mankind survived this is beyond me. They start at the top of the cell and the first thing is he gets throughn off through a table. The climb back up and he gets chokeslammed through the cage were a chair hits his mouth a busts him open. The rest is average but at the end the thumbtacks come in and he gets chockslammed on them. One of the sickest matches you will ever witness. Winner Undertekr. match rating 10/10
9. Stone COld vs. Kane for the wwe title in a first blood match- This was a good way to close off the show. They were starting to push kane let him win the title but than he lost it the next night back so dumb. ANyway the match was good not really wrestling at all just alot of hardcore action with chairs stairs and almost fire. Taker cost austin the title. WInner and new wwe champ Kane. Match Rating 8.5/10.
Well that raps up another i would give king of the ring 1998 a grade of 69.5/90 which is a 77% which means this is a perfect ppv. I would not say that is true but there are matches on this card that are unbelieable. If you can tell me if my review was helpful or not i would appreicate that. Thanks for your time.
Movie Review: Off With Their Heads? I don't get it Summary: 4 Stars This King Of The Ring "98" PPV is not The very best and not the worst. This PPV was best for the Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind. Them both has changed Hell in a Cell matches forever. Buy this video for this match. shamrock winning the King Of The Ring is ok and The Main Event for the WWF Title between Austin and Kane was not as good as the Hell in a Cell match. The rest of the matches are either average or below average.
Movie Review: mankind and undertaker changed cage matches forever Summary: 4 Starsi thought alot about what was going through foley's head when he was against the undertaker before the match, mankind told the undertaker to thrown him 15 fts down cage hitting the announcer table other devices on the table that could have end foley through then a few minutes later foley climbed on top of the cage to get chokeslammed by the understand i don't know what foley was thinking about it appears to me that it look like he was enjoying himself like he was disney world on vacation just volunteering to do these types of stunts especially i saw that famous smile of his with his tooth being stuck in his nose another bump he took that was not suppose to be included in the match was when the chair fell from the top of the cell and landed hard on foley's face that is probably the other reason he lost his tooth and the finally big bump of the match was getting chokeslammed on a high pile of thumbtacks those 3 bumps changed cage matches forever i orginally gave the match 3 stars i feel it was being a little mean so i could change the rating in the 3 to 4 star catergory and keep it as the 5 star rating for the memories if i made a list for the greatest wrestling matches ever this would probably b at the end or get honorable mention but for the memories it would be in the top five list i thank mick for risking his body for us he could have stopped at anytime even before the match began due to the high of the cage 15 feet is a long way down anything can happen between that type of distance while the fans was having the time of their lives his biggest fans which are his fan would crying their hearts out for foley to be save after the match ended mankind really is god he is just a spot fest bump machine he can do it all talk the talk and walk the walk he is in my top ten favorite wrestler of all time list i have to give credit for the undertaker as well he follow mick's lead of finishing the match it looked like he wanted to kill foley during the match but probably deep down in his heart he was feeling almost the same way as mick's family undertaker is a good wrestler when he wants to be even a great one at times for a man his size is almost the total package as a heel wrestler he speaks his microphone skill is nearly great not as good as heel hbk or the rock but still acceptable i can hear the guy talk without getting to bored his matches are usually average but on rare occasion can have four star or better matches with top wrestlers like mick, hhh, rvd, shawn michaels, kurt angle, brock lesnar, and randy orton he even had some decent outing with moderate ring performer the big show and average wrestler in the ring jbl so the man get it done in the ring if he work like this at all times the sky would be the limit for this man he would go out my way of calling one of the greatest if not the greatest big man wrestlers of all time but since he is getting older he has slowed down a little but no by much
