VHS Movie Reviews of Thumb Wars - The Phantom Cuticle [VHS]

Movie Review: Cracked me up!
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a hillarious spoof and I have watched it several times. All of the kids (ages 5-16) have enjoyed it as well. If you like silly, then this is a must have!

Movie Review: Thumb Wars
Summary: 3 Stars

I was not happy with the condition as it was scratched and was not in "GOOD" condition, I would call this "FAIR" condition. However, it played fine and was very Amusing.

Movie Review: Thumbtastic
Summary: 5 Stars

These are funny if you are into stupid-funny parodies. The whole family watches and cracks up at the stupidity. We watch at least on per week to keep us sane.

Movie Review: star wars parody (thumb wars)
Summary: 5 Stars

very funny, follows the movie to a T. has one scene where they're looking up princess bun's dress, but other than that pretty clean. i can't recall the language but if there is some, it's not much.

Movie Review: The Thumb is strong in this one
Summary: 5 Stars

Steve Oedekerk went all out for his first Thumb filmette, as Thumb Wars features thumbation on an epic scale. In the end, Oedekerk somehow managed to condense the whole Stars War story into less than thirty minutes of incredible animation and humorous dialogue. As a parody, it necessarily makes fun of some of the weaker elements in the Star Wars saga, but I can't imagine even the most die-hard Star Wars groupie not being able to enjoy the heck out of watching Thumb Wars. I don't know how they do the animation, but these thumbs are true characters capable of some great facial expressions. The whole light saber thing doesn't work that well, but some great CGI animation makes all of the space shots look great, especially the battle scenes, and the assembly of appendages hanging out at the alien cantina is not to be missed.

The gang's all here in this one, as Loke Groundrunner leaves his home planet in the company of Oobedoob Benubi and the effeminate droids Prissypeo and Beboobeep to join the Thumbellion. With the help of Hand Duet and Crunchy, our do-gooders manage to rescue Princess Bunhead from the evil clutches of Black Helmet Man and launch an attack on the gigantic, planet-spinning power of the Death Nail. Can they take advantage of the Self Destruct button placed all so conveniently on the Death Nail, or are Loke and his buddies doomed to fail against the might of the Thumbpire? And just what is the secret connection between Loke and Black Helmet Man? It's not necessarily what you think.

Admittedly, I found The Blair Thumb, the follow-up to this original Thumbation film release, to be funnier than Thumb Wars, but I can still recommend this short, twenty-eight minute filmette to anyone - including my fellow Star Wars fans. You'll be amazed that anyone took such a stupid idea and carried it as far as Steve Oedekerk did - but even that's nothing compared to what he actually accomplished in the end. It doesn't get much weirder than Thumb Wars - but it doesn't get much funnier, either.

Summary of Thumb Wars - The Phantom Cuticle [VHS]

Created by Steve Oedekerk, the writer of The Nutty Professor, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, and Patch Adams, this hilarious "thumbation" spoof features reluctant hero Loke Groundrunner and his tasty companion, Princess Bunhead, as they try to stop Black Helmet Man and the Evil Thumbpire from doing really bad things! So hold onto your cuticles, eat your peas and get ready for the first and only all-thumbs space epic. May the thumb be with you! 28 minutes. Includes an introduction by creator Steve Oedekerk and trailers for "Thumb Wars," "Thumbtanic," and "Blair Thumb."
You'll believe a thumb can talk! Writer-director Steve Oedekerk (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls) compresses highlights of the entire trilogy into this goofy burlesque of the original Star Wars. The humor is pretty adolescent, a spoofing series of pithy puns, winking in-jokes, silly sight gags, and character caricatures, but the screwy magic Thumbation skews it all into a brand-new realm. This revolutionary process marries desktop digital effects and good old-fashioned thumb puppetry with a twisted, sick genius: human mouths and eyes are not merely morphed onto the thumbs but squished into cartoonish exaggeration. The resulting creations are like strange alien beings from a galactic farce far, far away, and the film is an equally oddball mix of chintzy toy sets and doll costumes and elaborate CGI space battles. For an all-thumbs production, it's genuinely inspired.

The commentary by creator Steve Oedekerk and producer Paul Marshal doesn't shed much light on the production, but it does up the pun quotient significantly. The DVD debut also features trailers from Thumbation classics Thumbtanic and The Blair Thumb; gag "thumbographies" of the characters; a strange, silly interview with Gabba the Butt; and a gallery of storyboards (look closely and you'll see the title The Incredible Mr. Limpet printed on the bottom--guess who was funding this picture's preproduction). --Sean Axmaker
