VHS Movie Reviews of The Ten Commandments [VHS]

Movie Review: Simply Great
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has been part of my life for many years. I remember watching this on television for the first time and every year after, around easter, we knew to prepare for this spectacle when it came on the television. I remember how it filled my heart at such a young age with spirituality, a belief in a higher source and that although bad and good co existed we should all tolerate one another. Now with this beautiful, ornate and powerful spectacle created by the great Cecil B. Demille, boasting a great cast such as Charleton Heston, Yul Brynner, Estelle Taylor and the GREAT Edward G. Robinson and many more, on DVD, in beautiful sound and color, it can be enjoyed for many years to come. I was truly thrilled to find this on DVD accompanied by a silent version of The Ten Commandments. Simple divine.
You will not be dissapointed with any of the features included in this package.
Enjoy.

Movie Review: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS 50TH ANNIVERSARY DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the crowning glory of what a movie about Moses and the Ten Commandments should be. I remember seeing it when it first came out and was very imprressed with it at that time; however, this 50th anniversary edition is outstanding. I would recommend this very highly to anyone.

Movie Review: "BEHOLD HIS MIGHTY HAND." A Spectacle For The Ages.
Summary: 5 Stars

Cecil B. DeMille's final movie is his greatest achievement, a remake of the first half of his epic "The Ten Commandments," originally filmed in 1923 (which is included in this 3-Disc Collector's Edition in its entirety). With an all-star cast, authentic locations and a staggering amount of costumes, this movie is film-making at its greatest (though "Gone With The Wind" is also an example of marvelous movie magic). Charlton Heston stars in-dare I say it?-the role of a lifetime, as Moses, the leader of Israel. (He would go on to even greater fame as the title character in "Ben-Hur" 3 years later). The supporting cast is also excellent: Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, Vincent Price (in a rare non-horror movie role), Debra Paget, John Derek, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, John Carradine, Nina Foch, Martha Scott & H.B. Warner round out the main cast members. The movie is a classic. You never notice the time going by as you watch this 3 hour, 40 minute spectacle. Included in ths must-have collection is the original 1923 silent film (which is shorter than the main feature), a 37 minute, VI part documentary on the 1956 movie, newsreel footage of the 1956 premiere, a feature-length commentary on the 1956 movie, trailers and hand-tinted color footage of the Exodus & Red Sea sequences from the 1923 movie. Rated G (the special features are Not Rated).

Movie Review: Widescreen Only
Summary: 1 Stars

"50th Anniversary Collection" comes only in Widescreen format. No fullscreen.
Amazon advertises the "50th Anniversary Collection" comes with a fullscreen option under "format". However, Amazon means only the additional, silent-film is fullscreen, not both films. I wanted fullscreen, but was misled.

Otherwise, this is a five-star epic.

Summary of The Ten Commandments [VHS]

Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh
