VHS Movie Reviews of The New Misadventures of Ichabod Crane

Movie Review: Oh my gosh!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember seeing this only one time when I was younger. It was in 1984, I believe. Thought it was so cool then and I still think it is awesome now. My 4 year old daughter loves this version too. She is a big Halloween fan just like her mommy. Ichabod becomes the Headless horseman in this version. He says an incantation from a witch's spell book that he obtained from a witch. She had been using the spell to obtain gold and valuables from the village nearby. Ichabod is seen as a hero in this story. 2 thumbs up.

Movie Review: Sure to Delight Kids
Summary: 4 Stars

The New Misadventures of Ichabod Crane (1979) is a short, animated film that kids will enjoy. The synopsis basically plays out as follows. A narrator opens the film with a spooky poem about how nightly sights and sounds can "give you a fright". The narrated poem then mentions the headless horseman. On cue, the devilish headless horseman appears and terrifies a passing coach, robbing it of a chest of gold. The narrator finishes and we don't hear from him again until the end. The film then pans to a village where we see Ichabod Crane, a bookworm who's interested in the supernatural. The mayor tells Ichabod Crane that the headless horseman is causing trouble for the village and appoints him (along with the townspeople's enthusiastic approval) to rid them of the phantom. Ichabod accepts and ventures off with Washington, the talking horse, Wolf, the talking dog, and Rip van Winkle, the ever-sleepy coot. Viewers learn before they do that the headless horseman is actually nothing more than a disguise. Velma van Dam, an arrogant witch who lives at Wrung-neck Roost, transforms into the headless horseman whenever she recites a spell while holding her magic book. When our four heroes attempt to have a look inside her cabin when she's not home, she appears in the guise of her evil apparition and scares them away. But Rip van Winkle is left sleeping on her stoop and is captured. Velma turns him into a possum for her own amusement and holds him prisoner. Meanwhile, Ichabod, Washington and Wolf devise a plan to distract Velma long enough to make off with the stolen chest of gold, the magic book, and Rip. When they succeed, Velma makes several scarecrows come alive and sends the creatures after them. As our heroes flee, Ichabod tries spells from Velma's book to turn Rip back to normal (which first leads to a few humorous mistakes). After this is done, he tries a spell to stop the scarecrows. He unwittingly recites the spell that turns the book-holder into the headless horseman. Ichabod transforms and slays the scarecrows. The spell quickly wears off and Ichabod remarks that, now that he owns the book, he can use it to become the headless horseman whenever Velma van Dam tries to make trouble for the village. The four make their way back home and the narrator states that the headless horseman is sure to ride again - as Ichabod Crane, the village protector.

There is one thing that I should state about the film. Very young children may not enjoy it. There are a few scenes, especially with the headless horseman, that they may find too scary. Even though the movie is a roughly animated kids' film, the headless horseman has the laugh of a lunatic, wields a sword threateningly, and rides a horse that snorts fire. Another reason is that the movie is full of humorous dialogue that may go over a few kids' heads. For example, Ichabod: "It's a creepy-looking, tumbled down, evil, old, spooky cabin." Washington: "I hate to tell you this, but you would make a terrible real estate salesman." And that's about as advanced as it gets. Speaking from personal experience, I showed it to a kid going into 3rd grade I babysat for and he liked it just fine - wasn't scared and got the jokes. If your children can sit still for half an hour, can tolerate mildly scary scenes, and can appreciate basic humor, this is the film for them. Perfect for Halloween. Highly recommended.
