VHS Movie Reviews of The Muppet Movie [VHS]

Movie Review: Buy it, watch it, and be glad you did.
Summary: 5 Stars

THE MUPPET MOVIE is the first movie that I can actually remember watching in the theater. And I remember the funniest image my little four year-old-mind had ever captured: a car full of puppets driving around with another car upside down on top. I recently watched it again, and I now surprised that the movie has just as much entertainment in store for a 34-year-old as it did for a 4-year-old. Contrary to popular belief, the Muppets don't have a specific demogrpahic target audience. There is something in these movies (especially the first three) for everyone.

I was also amazed at the cameo star power which this film boasted. It features the likes of Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Cloris Leachman, Orson Welles, Richard Pryor, and Steve Martin just to name a few. The one-liners and Seinfeldesque situational comedy is abounding. And so is the pace: one minute slapstick and the next, dry and subtle (which is the one I like best).

As far as talk of "censorship" is concerned, I'm not going to reduce an excellent rating just because it doesn't show Kermit drinking wine or champagne (or whatever it was). Would I prefer it be the original version? Perhaps. But if some parent doesn't want their little kid to see Kermit the Frog consuming an alcoholic beverage then I can respect that too.

Now if we can just get THE MUPPET MOVIE soundtrack on compact disc...

Movie Review: Vaudeville humor
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great movie. My little boy likes it. On another level, "The Muppet Movie" seems to highlight Vaudeville humor (and even features a few cameos by some Vaudeville legends). This is movie is a real "hoot" for children as well as grown-ups. Fans of Vaudeville and classic comedy stars and even a few legndary actors of years ago will delight in the cameos. Kids will like Big Bird's cameo appearence as well.

It is good for kids to have educational and non-violent shows to watch such as Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. While the "The Muppet Movie" may not fit that criterea, it does teach children how to laugh and be silly, which is also an important skill to have in life, as it is always a good thing to have a sense of humor.

It also can educate older children on the aspects of Vaudeville humor; possibly getting them interested in the old movies, shorts, and the early days of TV.

I own a 1993 release on VHS. Many reviewers have commented on annoying cuts in the newer releases. My advise is to save your money and buy the older VHS version. It will be cheaper for you, with no cuts, and kids don't care about picture quality either.

Movie Review: Was Hollywood Ever Really Like This?
Summary: 5 Stars

This great movie paints a picture of Hollywood as a grand place full of wonder and magic, a place where the Muppets belong. I wonder if any movies today could do the same. Could they make Hollywood look like a place whose very purpose is to bring happiness to millions of people? Could they have cream of the crop guest stars in every cameo role from ice cream man to waiter, where no one's ego gets in the way and draws attention away from Kermit and his gang? I have my doubts. This may be one of the last great Hollywood movies, with great comedy and great songs (except for one song I'm not crazy about).

Kermit is one of the greatest characters ever. In my opinion he runs circles around Mickey Mouse. He's always humble, modest, and attempts to do what's right, but he also won't take any kind of guff from anybody. He knows when to take a stand. And he knows how to act in front of both children and adults without patronizing either. This movie is really a tribute to his greatness.

This movie's only flaw is that it is sometimes EXTREMELY cheesy. But you know, what can you expect from a puppet show? It's a wonder that it's so extremely clever with wonderful writing throughout. I think my favorite line is when Fozzy says, "I don't know how to thank you guys," and Kermit adds, "I don't know WHY to thank you guys." Hilarious. And there's a cool ghost town scene in the movie too that I wasn't expecting.

I'm not sure if I like the Muppet Movie more than the Muppets at Disney World, but man, it's still really good.

Movie Review: The Muppett Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

An excellent movie for the whole family. I bought it so that I could share it with my grandchildren and spent an evening enjoying it with my husband. Savey enough for adults without having to worry about what the children are seeing. I wish that more movies like this were available.
I was very happy with the condition of the movie and the speed with which it was delivered.

Movie Review: Don't Buy Censored!
Summary: 1 Stars

Okay, I love this movie! I remember watching it as a child, many times, and loving it, but I can't support this edition. It is censored! I don't support ANYTHING that is censored (movies, music, art, etc.).

So, I sadly have to say that I will not be owning a copy of The Muppet Movie until it is released uncensored. Maybe someday I'll be able to introduce this movie to my nieces. One can only hope.

Summary of The Muppet Movie [VHS]

NEW, SEALED!!
This simply irresistible first feature from the Muppets has Kermit the frog going from the swamps to Hollywood to be a star. As he travels and picks up his usual friends (Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear), Doc Hopper (Charles Durning) is in pursuit, looking for Kermit to be the spokesman for his frog-leg cuisine. A loose rendition of The Wizard of Oz, the film incorporates the same cagey humor as their breakout syndicated TV series The Muppet Show. This is one of the few times that a human cast (notably Steve Martin, Orson Welles, and Carol Kane) are integrated seamlessly with nonhumans. Worth noting is Paul Williams's score, which includes the Oscar-nominated "The Rainbow Connection." Williams's music, much like Howard Ashman's work on The Little Mermaid and other Disney films, provides more than atmosphere; there's a degree of magic here. Williams did not work on the future Muppet films until A Muppet Christmas Carol. His contributions made these films the best of the Muppet series. --Doug Thomas
Jim Henson vaulted Kermit, the famous floppy-armed frog, and his Muppet pals to the big screen with this charming 1979 musical adventure. Like the TV show that inspired it, Henson and director James Frawley playfully acknowledge movie clich?s and conventions and allow the characters to address the camera in asides, like a Hope and Crosby road film for the 1980s. The ambitious singing frog decides to leave his swamp and conquer Hollywood, gathering a group of friends along the way (Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, and more) and bumping into oodles of guest stars making tongue-in-cheek cameos (my favorite is the tip-of-the-hat appearance by Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy). Meanwhile, despicable fast-food king Charles Durning pursues Kermit, hoping to make him the spokesfrog for his Frogs-Legs restaurant franchise. Austin Pendleton costars as Durning's sad sack henchman while guest stars include James Coburn, Dom DeLuise, Madeleine Kahn, Steve Martin, Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Carol Kane, Cloris Leachman, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas, Elliot Gould, Orson Welles, and Big Bird. Paul Williams penned the bouncy, song-filled score. You'll believe a frog can sing! --Sean Axmaker
