VHS Movie Reviews of The Inheritors [VHS]Movie Review: Once Tomas is Armed, Beware! Summary: 4 StarsThis film is a ride into a mezmerizing underworld of what is a residue of Germany's dark, teutonic past. And history is seeking to repeat itself. Unknown to the dead Hitler, his dark legacy is to be inherited by impressionable and disenfranchised youth.
In 1972, we had Michael Jackson's famed rat, Ben. Now in the '80s, we have Tomas. And once Tomas is indoctrinated, brainwashed, and armed, watch out! He becomes one of Hitler's.....INHERITORS! And if you're a left-winged progressive and he takes your photo, watch out, he's after you!
Tomas is a young, troubled teen experiencing an upsetting homelife, misunderstanding and bullying at school let alone bodily changes-hence, the sexual scenes where he daydreams of the girl he rides a motorcycle with.
No sooner do the disturbing homelife and the bullying at school take their psychological and emotional stronghold, than Tomas is lured by a swim club acquaintance into a youth club which turns out to be a fascistic underworld that Germany has not quite yet managed to exterminate. But it is soon to reemerge. The youngsters' mentor is a member of a fascist party seeking to take control of the government; hence, he is seeking to be elected into office and thus help to usher in a "new world order."
Tomas, under this holocaust denier's influence, takes on Hitler's legacy as his cantankerous mother and school take second place. His brother commits suicide as a result of family pressures, his uncaring mother tells him to leave home, and he's on his way to join a special camp and school which seeks to revamp Hitler's policy of anti-Semitism, brutality, and hate; a brutal legacy which Tomas......inherits!
Movie Review: Anger and Hate Summary: 4 StarsThe Inheritors"
Hate and Anger
Amos Lassen
Walter Bannert's "The Inheritors" exaggerates the power and influence of the modern neo-Nazi movement in Germany today. What the film tries to do is focus on the family situations of disenfranchised youth who happen to fall in with the neo-Nazis. It is the characters and the relationships between them that make this such an interesting film even though the message is one of hate.
We should look at the film as a warning not to let the lessons and mistakes of the past to come back to us. We see what happened during the Nazi reign in Germany and how some would like to see it happen again. The youth movement was the backbone of the Nazi quest for power and we must pay attention to this.
Even though the film is terribly disturbing it is excellently made. We watch as a "normal" teen is drawn to a new Neo-Nazi group and how that group splinters into separate military and political groups. It is completely realistic.
Beneath the umbrella of neo-Nazism is anger, frustration and hate. Thomas and his brother are drawn to the movement as they experience life in a dysfunctional family. Thomas becomes alienated from his parents and vulnerable to deception. He longs to belong and to feel needed and for him joining a neo-Nazi organization gives him what he searches for. There is a lot of rebellion and we ask ourselves if this could happen again in today's world.
Thomas finds the comfort he needs and as he goes deeper and deeper into the group he finds himself making changes in his life--he quits school and leaves home and his search is what makes the movie so real. The ending of the film is tragic and it is a consequence of becoming deeply involved with violence. All countries have problems of reaching the youth as young people struggle with identity and here that youthful rebelliousness can open up horrors.
Movie Review: Depraved, Deprived Summary: 4 StarsEvery society seems to have a difficult impasse with its young, as they struggle to become SOMEBODY other than someone's kid. In Germany - as well as in some other lands - the rebelliousness too often opens the door just a crack to the horrors of the Nazi era, and this movie treats us to a depressing but ocassionally riveting glimpse through the window. Sired by a dolt, foaled by an oppressed dullard, our protagonist wends the corridors of a neo-nazi youth group used as a poltical tool (and pawn). If you're able to follow in German, the movie is more telling than the subtitles convey - but no subtitles have ever translated a film to perfection. The quality of the image is awful - as if the DVD was a Chinese pirated edition. A worthy effort by director and cast, but once viewed it will gather dust in a library, so if see it you will, rent before you buy. Whatever happened to the 25-cent matinee ?
Movie Review: A Rude Awakening Summary: 5 StarsOur political leaders should view this film so the lessons of the past don't come to haunt us in the future. What do you get when you outsource jobs, move manufacturing overseas, and illegal immigrants take jobs in your country? No future for the young who became easy recruits for terrorists.
This film does an excellent job of portraying what happened during the Nazi era in Germany and is happening in the present era. The youth movement was the backbone of their ambitious goal of seizing power in the government and expanding their agenda into other nations. If we don't pay attention, this could happen to us.
Movie Review: Fantastic Film!! Summary: 5 StarsThis film shows the power of the neo-nazi movement in Germany following the second World War. It does so very well. You will enjoy this film, especially if you are educated on pre WWII German sociology and psychology (basic 20th century european history really).
Disenfranchised kids are lured into the Neo-Nazi underground and the drama, action, adventure that follows is gripping. The main character is strong and his story line is wonderfully constructed. The sex and nudity is probably overdone, and the drama sometimes too strong, but the positive characteristics of the film well overcome the few negative ones.
