Movie Review: Great movie - terrible DVD

There are plenty of reviews on the movie itself available here and elsewhere, so I don't feel the need to add much more. It's a terrific movie - 'nuff said. This DVD itself, though, is the worst I've ever seen. The film quality is poor throughout - very grainy. There are also lots of dropped frames, particularly in the first 30 minutes or so. Spend your money on a better version of this excellent movie - you'll be glad you did.Movie Review: Great to see images of NYC/Harlem from back in the day. Humor is very clever and subtle. Very entertaining film!

Based on what I'd read about this film previously, I was pretty sure I'd like it. Well after seeing it just now, I liked it much more than I expected. The humor in this film is so well done...from the physical manner in which the other "white aliens" carry themselves, to the conversation of the secretary inside the Marine Midland Bank office ("...he wears these shirts with epaulets on the shoulders..."). Great casting all around. This movie also sends a message about "the man", and his contribution to the black community's drug problem.

If you like odd old movies, try this one. Actually I'm surprised no one has reviewed it yet. Funny and strange, this had a real following when it came out. For me Brother from Another Planet is on my top 100 list. Maybe not the best of the best, but I would have it in my movie experience collection for sure.Movie Review: Totally unexpected!

Summary of The Brother from Another Planet [VHS]
Having been stymied in the midst of trying to make Matewan, John Sayles wrote what he thought could be a cheap, quick little movie and it turned out to be this near classic, which blends fish-out-of-water comedy with trenchant and serious science fiction. Joe Morton plays an extraterrestrial whose spaceship crashes in New York Harbor. When he swims ashore, he finds that most of Harlem is filled with earthlings who look just like him. He can't speak, but he quickly learns to communicate; he also finds ways to understand these strange, quarrelsome creatures, who seem to talk forever without really saying much. Sayles is at his economic best, drawing a touchingly complex performance from the silent Morton and good acting from a strong supporting cast of mostly unknowns. --Marshall FineTaiwan Video
