Movie Review: Heartbreaking! Carrie Snodgress is pitch PERFECT!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars
It took her ten years to come back to the big screen after her golden globe winning and oscar nominated turn in 1970's "Diary of a Mad Housewife", but this movie is well worth it. Carrie plays Louise a tormented librarian who is haunted by the lover that got away years ago and also by her domineering father. Finally she snaps and has had enough from her father and the table gets turned, but then the unthinkable happens, just when the audience is screaming "Yeah, you go girl?", the worst thing imaginable happen's to Louise. This was a movie i picked up in the video store and, i'm ashamed to say, I judged it by its cover. Bad move. It was in the Horror section and the front cover showed a rather menacing monkey, so i thought i'd be in for a scary little treat. however, half an hour into the film I realised i was watching a bizarre film about a woman with a pet monkey, who lived with her wheelchair-bound father who she didnt like too much. On the upside, there were a few interesting scenes where the woman imagined retaliating against her father, but thats about it really. the monkey didnt really do anything fantastic either. bizarre film.

A psychological thriller/character study about an insecure, sheltered spinster's revolt against her invalid, almost insane father. Louise learns to escape her unhappy life by hiding in the attic...where the tables will be turned on Daddy when she finds out what's up there.Taking her Diary of a Mad Housewife acclaim to effective extremes, Carrie Snodgress is disturbingly convincing in The Attic (1980), a morbid slice of gothic pie in which she plays a dowdy librarian, obsessively grieving 19 years after the disappearance of her picture-perfect boyfriend. This prolonged sadness is aggravated by her apparently disabled father (Ray Milland), who dominates her life with such abusive bitterness that she descends even deeper into tortured desperation. What does she discover in the attic? We're not telling, but suffice it to say Daddy's evil goes beyond expectations! Directed with earnest compassion for its damaged wallflower, The Attic is wretched psychodrama at its most bizarre. --Jeff Shannon
