Movie Review: The Alamo TV miniseries

Criticized for some odd casting choices and a small budget that put certain limitations on the movie, The Alamo: 13 Days to Glory, based on an excellent book by Lon Tinkle, is an above average TV miniseries documenting the story of the siege of the Alamo in 1836. It's early in the morning on February 23, 1836 and San Antonio is alive with a celebration of George Washington's birthday. It's the next day that Mexican dictator Santa Anna arrives with his army well ahead of schedule, forcing 152 Texans and their families to take refuge in the Alamo, a rundown Franciscan mission. Hoping to buy time for Sam Houston to build an army, the Alamo defenders wait for reinforcements, hoping they'll come before the inevitable attack. The movie has its flaws, the budget didn't allow for many extras and certain scenes are used repeatedly especially action scenes, but 13 Days gets the idea right. The story is of how a force of less than 200 held off an army of thousands for almost two weeks. It is definitely a TV miniseries, but it gets the spirit of the story down. Alamo fans should at least give this one a try.
There's some odd casting choices here, but for the most part the actors are pretty good. James Arness is too old to play Jim Bowie and would have been an ideal Bowie during his Gunsmoke years, but he's believable as the famous knife fighter. Similarly, Brian Keith is too old to play Davy Crockett, but the veteran actor pulls off the part. The best choices of casting are for Colonel William Travis and Santa Anna. A young Alec Baldwin plays Travis, the Alamo commander so desperately fighting for Texas freedom. Raul Julia is an inspired choice for Santa Anna, the Mexican dictator who is an ultra-patriot fighting for Mexico but also a little crazy. This is one of the few Alamo movies to include a big part for Santa Anna, and it's great to see both sides of the battle. Other cast members include Jim Metzler as James Bonham, the Alamo messenger, Kathleen York as Susannah Dickinson, Tom Schanley as Danny Cloud, one of the younger defenders, and David Ogden Stiers as Colonel Black, an English officer serving on Santa Anna's staff. I won't go through the whole list, but 13 Days gets credit for showing a lot of Alamo defenders. Even look for John Wayne's son Ethan as a coonskin-cap wearing defender!
I think it's a safe bet that this miniseries is not going to be released on DVD anytime soon so we're left with VHS tapes. I had good luck with the vendors selling the tapes so don't worry about that. The tape is on one cassette so with a 170-minute movie, the quality is average but keep in mind it's almost 25 years old. It's not as good as John Wayne's The Alamo or the 2004 version, but it's definitely worth a watch for Alamo buffs!
