Movie Review: Romantic View of Emma's Life
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a typical London Films Korda classic of the time. While a beautiful and romantic film, much of the incidents portrayed in Emma's life are highly romanticized and inaccurate. Vivian Leign is her usually charged and bouncy self, and Olivier his usual stiff upper lip. The film becomes more a show of chemistry between these two famous actors of the time, with history loosely thrown in!

Vivian Leigh is all over this film, and while some find her bubbly manner charming, at times it can be annoying. I was half expecting her to go into her Scarlet bit while Olivier (Nelson) was being dragged along with the story. The production value is certainly first-rate, although a bit inaccurate at times. The film's music was certainly not period at all, and at one point one hears "A Life on the Ocean Wave" in the background, a march written for Royal Marine Bands in the 1880s. So much for accuracy! "Hearts of Oak" was much better and the words to it inspiring to hear. One can tell this is a WW2 film, as references to Bonaparte seem awfully much like Hitler!

The final battle scene at Trafalgar is again typical movie fair for the time. Very patriotic and glorious, with Nelson expiring in true heroic fashion onboard Victory at the end. For a more accutate view of these famous lovers one should turn to the "Nelson Affair" if you can find it, and the BBC production "I remember Nelson" . Both will give you a less fluffy account of these two famous persons and their times. This film is a fine example for its time, and for fans of Leign and Oliver, but its take on historical events is weak at best.

Movie Review: AVAILABLE in DVD format!
Summary: 5 Stars

Does anyone know this great movie, my favorite staring Vivien Leigh, is now available in DVD format as an import? I watched it and the quality is quite good. Check it out. Available right here on Amazon!

Movie Review: Leigh and Olivier at their peak
Summary: 5 Stars

THAT HAMILTON WOMAN stars Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier at the peak of their powers, a marvellous movie which recounts the ill-fated affair between Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton. Alan Mowbray puts in a fantastic performance as Sir William Hamilton

Emma Hart (Vivien Leigh), a young woman of easy virtue, arrives in Naples to marry the son of Sir William Hamilton. It soon becomes apparent that the son has no intentions of marrying her, and so she enters into a marriage of convenience with Sir William himself. Years pass and Emma, now Lady Hamilton, meets the acquaintance of Lord Horatio Nelson (Olivier), and they embark on a thrilling affair. Emma's reputation is pulled through the mud and Nelson returns to battle Napoleon's approaching forces, as the romance rushes to it's tearful conclusion.

Regarded as Winston Churchill's favourite film, it was made during the height of WW2, and partly meant to serve as an exercise in morale-boosting amongst the troops, THAT HAMILTON WOMAN is still an enjoyable dramatic experience. Fans of Vivien Leigh won't be disappointed by her amazing portrayal of Emma Hart Hamilton. The movie also features Sara Allgood as Emma's mother and Gladys Cooper as Lady Nelson. Heather Angel plays the young woman to whom Emma tells her story in the prologue. Rene Hubert designed Vivien Leigh's cavalcade of gorgeous gowns. Another fine Alexander Korda-helmed epic.

Movie Review: Emma and Vivien much alike
Summary: 5 Stars

They both died in their early 50s and indeed supported tirelessly their men(Nelson & Olivier). Because of their women; they became Lords... Vivien Leigh is really playing herself in this Korda-production(made as propaganda in order 2 get the States involved here in the Europeen-conflict)... When u read Vivien`s letters(as u can in the biography by Hugo Vickers) you`ll see that Vivien`s Emma is a variation of herself...

Vivien Leigh is the all-time-great-actress from a bygone era - don`t miss this film - their only film together as a married couple. Vivien set aside; the film offers a lot in dialogue, photography, performances, set design and music. Winston Churchill(his favorite movie) tortured his visitors who had to sit through it on more than 1 occasion hehehe.

Movie Review: There is that Hamilton Woman
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite romantic movie. Vivien Leigh is dazzling as Emma, Lady Hamilton the love of Lord Nelson's life and Lawrence Olivier is just so sad and wonderful that half the audience probably falls in love with him before Emma does. In real life Emma and Lord Nelson spent a much longer time togehter than shown in the movie but that's okay. The film does a near perfect job of depicting the out of control passion that flowed between these two people.
