SummerSlamm 1992 is often referred to as the greatest SummerSlam of all time. In my opinion, it is tied with SummerSlam 1994. '92 was unique in a lot of ways. First, if you can actually get a copy of it, I bet the first thing you'll notice is the huge crowd at the old Wembley Stadium. There are like 84 thousand or 86 thousand people there. You just don't see crowds like that anymore at wrestling shows, unless the WWE takes WrestleMania to the Astrodome or Safeco Field. A lot of the young fans today might not know that once, SummerSlam was considered the WrestleMania of the summer. It was the second biggest PPV of the year. Nowadays, an average SummerSlam crowd is about the same you'd see at No Mercy or Backlash or Vengeance or something. In 1992, when the WWF was thinking straight, SummerSlam was huge. The people in London got their money's worth this fateful summer's night. The isleway is enormous. That's another thing you don't see in this strange age of ramps that are stupid looking. The isle is so long at this event it seems like the Superstars are tired from all the walking by the time they get to the ring! And then the real action starts. The first match is the Legion Of Doom against Money Inc. Hawk and Animal drive down to the ring with their manager Paul Ellering on three motorcycles. They carry with them their strange puppet companion Rocco, mounted on the front of Hawk's bike. Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, doing commentary along Vince McMahon hilariously yells out "The dummy's drivin' the bike." He is referring to Rocco. since it looks like he's sitting behind the handlebars. There are other awesome matches on there, too, like Shawn Michaels and Rick "The Model" Martell battling in a unique heel vs. heel match with a special stipulation that neither man could hit the other in the face because it would upset Shawn's manager (and Rick's real life wife) Sherri. Of course there is the awesome battle between Bret "The Hitman" Hart and his brother-in-law The British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith. This is only for the Intercontinental Championship, but was the stellar main event of the evening. It did great things for both men's careers, particularly Bret's. The Ultimate Warrior and Mach Man Randy Savage square off for the WWF Championship, with the mystery looming over of just whose corner Mr. Perfect would lend his services. The whole ordeal eventually comes out as a ruise, orchestrated by Perfect and Ric Flair. Actually, before the event strats, besides the really awesome old WWF wrestling figures commercials you can find on just about all of these old tapes, there is a little video package of different shots of England. Then the fans are asked outside the arena whose corner Mr. Perfect will be in, and if the British Bulldog will be able to go through with taking the fight to his brother-in-law Bret, or not. These really cool little trinkets are absent from WWE TV these days and is one reason in my mind so many people have turned away from it. The fans were always dealed in as an important factor back then. It might have hust been a simple little interview, but it was great and it really adds to the event. Plus, The Undertaker arrives to the ring in a hearse and does battle with Kamala, setting up their Casket Match at Survivor Series just three months later. Believe me, I am an expert on the "Golden Days of the WWF" and despite a lot of people on Amazon.com not knowing what they're talking about in posting negative reviews about these older WWF events, this one is one you need to get. SummerSlam 1992 is worth every dollar you have, and all the ones you don't. 5 of 5 stars here, baby! |
