VHS Movie Reviews of Street Safe I [VHS]Movie Review: Four Thumbs Up !!! Summary: 5 StarsI started a website 8 yrs ago called "Martial Arts Video Reviews". Out of hundreds of videos, and 4 different reviewers, we felt Street Safe # 1 was, and still is, one of our favorites. For those that don't want to spend 3-5 yrs in a dojo, training 3-4 days a week, we felt it's one of the best-and-quickest-to-learn self-defense systems around! Anyone looking for a quick self-defense fix, that takes weeks instead of months or years, this is it!!!
Movie Review: Waste of money Summary: 1 StarsI bought this video based on the high reviews. What a mistake.
I've been involved in martial arts for 30 years, taught kids and adults and taught several rape prevention classes as well. This video does more harm than good.
Let me save you some money. Paul Vunak may be a well respected martial artist and even a trainer of respected organizations but that's not what you'll get on this VHS.
He teaches you to:
Thrust your fingers into an assailant's eyes - fingers together.
Kick to the knee
Scoop kick to the groin - kick goes past the groin then scoops up and back toward you.
Elbow to the face
Slap to the face
Head butt
Bite - as a last resort
Now put them in combinations and don't forget to run away once you're victorious. That's it.
Using the techniques he demonstrates, you will be open for a variety of counters. He completely ignores lots of important principles of street fighting and glosses over others. He doesn't talk about avoiding a fight (much more important than knowing how to fight) and he doesn't talk about the most important aspect of street safety - attitude.
This video will undoubtedly get some folks interested in taking real martial arts classes and that's good. It will also leave some people grossly over-confident that they can apply what he taught on this one-hour video and that's bad.
Rather than waste your money (I bought it for $10 on E-Bay and it was still overpriced) spend $10 to purchase pepper spray. Carry it on your keychain. Better yet, buy one for your keychain, one for the car glove box, and a couple for your wife/girlfriend. Know how the safety lock works. It is good for about 10 feet and a 3-8 second burst depending on the size. Aim for the shirt, not the face. People's heads move around but their bodies are relatively stationary. If you aim for the shirt, the spray will rise into the assailant's eyes.
Save your money - don't buy this video.
Movie Review: Good Summary: 5 StarsIf you want a quality basic self-defense system, then this is a great choice. It has simple solutions to most attacks, which is more practical than what most martial arts has to offer. The only critisism I have, is that it is quite extreme against low to moderate threat levels. Someoneone grabbing your hand or tapping your shoulder type encounter does not in most cases justify the blood and guts approach in this video, but in more serious cases like a street attack, mugging, rape and similar, this is extremely realistic and easy to remember and perform. And I must say, I really don't like the way Paul Vunak's company does their advertising. Just read it, and you'll understand what I mean. It's ironic, cause it's not even necessary to have this outragious and silly advertising when the product is good.
Movie Review: A great self defense video Summary: 5 StarsThis video is awesome. After spending the last 13 years training in karate, Krav Maga, and Brazilian Jujitsu I think I have a good idea of what curriculum should be taught in a self defense class. To be honest this video allows someone to become legitimately capable of defending themselves within several weeks. There are eight simple moves that Paul Vunak teaches and they are all simple, devastating and could function in the worst situations imaginable (icy streets, after a few drinks, dark close quarters, when you are physically tired). However, in order to work they should be practiced on a daily basis for 5-15 mins. for several months at least. You might want to try to find a partner and buy pads to strike also. Without reinforcing these moves into your muscle memory you might be in trouble.
Movie Review: You really could take down someone twice your size Summary: 4 StarsIf you are after very basic self defence and thats all, you can't go far wrong with this video. This video does not contain armed forces unarmed combat as such. A few of the moves look similar to others I have studied. I feel that this video is a bit too concerned with what to do then run away. I know taking your self out of harms way is what should be done, but there is nothing on blocking attacks or punching. I would recomend this video to women (thats not being sexist by the way, you will understand the practical aplications if you see the video) and people with fears about walking dark streets etc. For people that want a bit more of a traditional fighting without running away you should check out some of Pauls other stuff. It is really amazing.I think I would be wrong to dismiss this info, when it is instinctive it is a brilliant form of defence. If you need extra confidence on the street you will like this video. ------------------------------------------------------------- This is in addition to what I wrote previously. I dont think I gave this video time to sink in before reviewing it. Now after practicing the moves for a while I had a chance to put them into practice. Even after a few drinks the moves were imprinted on my brain and instanteneous...
