Summary of Stealing Time - The New Science Of Aging [VHS]

This three-tape set from PBS focuses on how humans age, what scientists are learning about the aging process, and how we all might be facing a much longer future than ever believed possible. The first documentary deals with the natural history of aging and focuses on a physician who is studying people who live to be 100 in an effort to understand how genetics and lifestyle combine to produce long lives. Scientists are also seen studying animals, including turtles and apes, as they age. The mechanisms of aging and efforts to "turn back the clock" are the focus of the second video, which features a segment on a doctor in his 70s whose studies of mice on a "calorie restricted" diet led him to put himself and his daughter on the same diet. The third installment interviews active and very capable people of advanced age, such as members of the Harlem Jazz Legends band who are in their 80s. In interviews, seniors talk about coping with mental problems associated with aging, such as memory loss. This is a fascinating topic, and the PBS documentaries present serious science with clarity as well as entertainment value. --Robert J. McNamara
