Movie Review: Zorro in name only
Summary: 3 Stars

The plot and characters are good, basic western stuff, and up to the high technical standards of Republic productions. But a Zorro's Fighting Legion it aint. Little effort wasmade in restoring the Zorro mystique to our hero, as in The Mask of Zorro. He simply changes clothing like putting on our longjohns in winter. The mystery of the big boss is well done and the courthouse gang sounds like some books I have read about the late Lydon Johnson's Texas political machine.

I was a child in the 70/80ties, and saw this movie in the German-TV. Now I was able to review my old childhood-hero again on this amazing VHS video. George Turner did a great performance!!!
But... where is the DVD...????

Second Special Footnote, actor Roy Barcroft one of the most sought after badmen of the Saturday Matinee era --- His face appeared in more westerns than any cowboy villain who rode the range in the '40s and '50s --- an complete account of "Roy Barcroft:King of the Badmen", which is the title of Bobby J. Copeland's book on the life and times of "Republic Pictures Number One Villain". Barcroft appeared in B-Westerns and Serials - became one of the most recognized actors, when you heard that familiar voice --- you were in for it. Roy was one of the few bad guys that once you saw his name in the credits, you were going to get your money's worth. Barcroft was my first favorite and my second was Harry Woods, who in many ways reminded me of each other --- I remember watching Barcroft in a variety of Republic Serials --- "Manhunt of Mystery Island" (1945), as Captain Mephisto --- "The Purple Monster Strikes" (1945), as the invading Martian --- "G-Men Never Forget" (1948), a dual role as the honest police commissioner and the lead villain (good & bad look-alikes) --- "Don Daredevil Rides Again" (1951) --- "Radar Men from the Moon" (1952), as Retik --- My favorite B-Westerns were the casting of Wild "Bill" Elliott and Allan "Rocky" Lane vs the under handed dealings of Roy Barcroft, boss, leader of the gang or henchmen --- every frame was B-Westerns at their best --- With knock-down-drag-out fight scenes that gave you everything you ever wished for and more in an action film --- fellow actors, producers and directors all agree Roy Barcroft was as beloved as anybody else in the Motion Picture business.

Movie Review: Not the worst, but the dullest
Summary: 1 Stars

This isn't the worst serial I've ever seen (WINNERS OF THE WEST gets that honor), but this is easily the dullest. Even the mountains of stock footage from earlier (and much better) Zorro serials can't alleviate the sheer tedium of George Turner, the world's most non-descript Masked Avenger. Opt for ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP, ZORRO RIDES AGAIN or ZORRO'S FIGHTING LEGION instead. And hey, Artisan, where's the DVD releases of the Republic serials????????

Movie Review: Thrills and Spills!
Summary: 5 Stars

This l947 Republic actioner moves at jet-speed pace, thanks mainly to great performances by Peggy Stewart, as Postmistress "Kate," and her co-star George Turner. This is basically a standard westerner but the epidode endings are wonderfully inventive--especially the one where Kate and zorro are trapped in a cave with a wall of water racing toward them. Peggy is the perfect serial heroine: feisty, gutsy, and she looks great in her cowgirl outfit and does most of her own stunt work. She began making westerns in l937 with "Wells Fargo" and has appeared recently in "Seinfeld" and often guest-starred on the old Gunsmoke series. This can't compare with Republic's greatest serial: "Spy Smasher" but then few can. Still, this one is worth your money and terrific performances of Peggy, George and the others.
