Movie Review: Loggers
Summary: 3 Stars
A wildcat family of loggers set everyone against them when they break a strike. On of only a few films that Newman directed it has a cast that has him as Henry Fonda's son, Michael Sarrazin as his son, Lee Remick as his wife and Richard Jaekel as his brother. Not a BAD film it's just nothing great. Nice title song by Charlie Pride.Movie Review: Read the Book

I saw this movie at the theater in 1971 when it was first released. I enjoyed it immensely. Fonda's Henry with his cast still sticks in my mind. My older brother mentioned it was based on Ken Kesey's book and that contained quite a bit more depth than the movie. Since I am an avid reader and know that the book is always better than the movie, I'm surprised it took me 38 years to get around to it. (Too many books, too little time.) I'm now about half way through the book and soooo sorry I waited this long. I hope they release this on DVD with deleted scenes. I may just buy the VHS tape and digitize it, just to preserve it. I have family in the Pacific NW and have spent some time out there. I love it in the summertime, but as a resident of sunny Florida now would probably go psychotic if I had to spend my winters there. That said, I can see how the area would shape people as described in the book. My younger brother (who lives out there and used to own a mill) replied this way when I asked how they survived the winters, "You just wear wool." That simplistic straight ahead approach to life leaps from the pages of this book. Read it, you won't regret it. I saw this movie when I was a kid and read the book a few years later in college. Enjoyed both. Got my hands on the VHS tape about 20 years ago and my VCR finally ate it a few weeks ago. I've been pining for the DVD for a long time.
I related to the movie in part because I mostly grew up in an Oregon mill town and did part of first grade on the southern Oregon coast. The characters in the movie reminded me a lot of the older guys I knew. My favorite scene is when Neuman cuts the local union boss's desk in two and of course the one finger salute at the finale says it all.

Summary of Sometimes a Great Notion [VHS]
Paul Newman, an American original, would seem to be the perfect choice to direct a film adaptation of the second novel by another American original--Ken Kesey. But Kesey's novel, written under the influence of both LSD and growing fame, was a mishmash, and Newman's film can't rescue it. It also seems strange to see the ultraliberal Newman starring as a strike-busting logger who honors a contract on principle, rather than observe union concerns, bringing all sorts of misery down on his family. Henry Fonda is interesting as Newman's father, but the film never finds its footing. One killer sequence, however: Richard Jaeckel, as Newman's brother, trapped under a log in a river, slowly drowning despite Newman's best efforts to save him. --Marshall FineGeneration Gap Video
