VHS Movie Reviews of Some Like It Hot (1959) [VHS]

Movie Review: Classic Comedy Film
Summary: 5 Stars

Classic old comedy film in the late 1950's by Billy Wilder starring Marilyn Monroe taking on cross-dressing & gender roles when such things weren't really done. They probably got away with it because it was so funny & because of the film's fast pace. It holds up very well today & is still considered one of the great comedy films of all time. A must to have.

Movie Review: A riot of laughter!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a hilarious movie wherein two musicians accidentally witness a mob murder during the Prohibition era and have to consequently hide-out as females in an all girl band. With the lead singer being Marilyn Monroe, well, there are some hilarious scenes! I always feel sorry for Marilyn Monroe when I see her movies. I get the impression she doesn't fully comprehend the possible dangers that are out there when a woman is so overtly sensuous. And I definitely get that feeling in this movie. She's so naturally all woman, but unfortunately, in this world, that can lead to trouble. And well, I guess it did.
Anyway, the movie is a riot of laughter. And Marilyn really shines.

Movie Review: A Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This was a "must have" for our collection, an awesome video, ahead of its time.

Movie Review: Funny, classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Some Like It Hot is one of the funniest movies ever made. Directed by the peerless Billy Wilder it features Jack Lemmon in his comedic best, dashing young Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe as sexy as she'd ever get. It has everything, the mob, cross dressing, chase scenes, love, glamorous Hollywood stars and the best last line in movie history. The most important feature of the movie is however the script. It is witty, tongue-in-cheek, smart. It makes you wish there were more more scripts like that. People commenting on this movie seem to feel obligated to mention how difficult Marilyn was on the set. Who cares? The girl had problems. The film is perfect.

Movie Review: What's Not To Like?
Summary: 5 Stars

Some people still say this is the greatest comedy ever made in Hollywood. Who am I to argue? Even after almost 50 years, it's still very funny and not the least bit dated. It is one of the true classics in the history of film.I I know one thing: Marilyn Monroe never looked hotter!

The film is a wonderful combination of comedy, action, suspense and romance with great old-time gangster scenes played out first in Chicago and then in Miami Beach. George Raft and Nehimiah Persoff are just great as gangsters.

The stars, though, are Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis but you can also enjoy performances from famous known actors like Pat O'Brien and Joe E. Brown.

The action scenes are in the beginning and end. In the middle, the bulk of the film, is the main story featuring comedy and romance. Lemmon has the best lines in the film and his facial expressions alone evoke lots of laughter.

This film is so famous that there is no need going into detail, but for some younger person reading this, don't worry about this being an old-fashioned, boring black-and-white film your parents or grandparents liked but you would find boring. You'll have fun watching this, too, I guarantee it.

Summary of Some Like It Hot (1959) [VHS]

When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a southbound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the twonewestand homeliestmembers of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect...until a lovelorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for Josephine, an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for Daphne, and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax! Nominated* for 6 Academy Awards(r), Some Like It Hot is the quintessential madcap farce and one of the greatest of all film comedies (The Motion Picture Guide). *1959: Director, Actor (Lemmon), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography (B&W), Art Direction (B&W), Costume Design (B&W, winner)
Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behavior. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert Horton
