VHS Movie Reviews of Silver Streak (1976) [VHS]Movie Review: Fun, fun movie. Summary: 5 StarsHave this on VHS and now happy to have it on DVD. Love watching movies over that I enjoy---this is one of them.
Movie Review: Such a classic! Summary: 5 StarsI've always loved this movie. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are hilarious together. The scene in the train station where Grover tries to make George look "black" is one of the funniest scenes of all time!
Movie Review: The Silver Streak Summary: 5 StarsOne of Gene Wilder's best movies and you will laugh through the whole movie. It's just one mishap after another. It also has a good cast for the characters.
Movie Review: A train ride to remember Summary: 5 StarsI remember seeing this film upon its first release, and really enjoyed it. Scriptwise, it's really no more than lightweight Hitchcock fare. Gene Wilder--one of my favorite comic actors--plays it fairly straight through the first half. Then the real fun begins when he runs into Richard Pryor's character halfway through. This was the beginning of a great screen partnership (that restroom scene with Pryor trying to teach Wilder how to be black has to be one of the funniest moments in screen history) which took both Wilder & Pryor through four films ("Stir Crazy" was hilarious; the last two were disappointing). What chemistry!
The supporting cast is top-notch. Jill Clayburgh is sort of shoe-horned into the damsel-in-distress leading lady role; but she's so engaging that you can't take your eyes off her. Ned Beatty is the conventioner (aka federal agent) who warns Wilder of the danger. Patrick McGoohan is sophisticated villainy as Devereau. Ray Walston is weasally fun as Devereau's right-hand thug. And an underused Scatman Crothers gives some light comic touches as the train's porter.
A blend of comedy, action, suspense & mystery, "Silver Streak" is slightly dated but still lots of fun!
Movie Review: Amazon Came Through! Summary: 5 StarsMy sister tried various outlets searching for this film. She wanted it as a special gift for a friend. I suggested Amazon and..there it was. It has provided many hours of enjoyment for her friend. For that reason we give both Amazon and Silver Streak five stars.
Summary of Silver Streak (1976) [VHS]Despite the presence of hack director Arthur Hiller, this hybrid comedy-thriller works most of the time as pleasant faux Hitchcock. Gene Wilder is a book editor who is relaxing by taking a cross-country train ride. Then he gets caught up in a murder--and becomes a suspect. It's up to him to prove his own innocence. As noted, the script, by Colin Higgins, owes a big debt to Alfred Hitchcock; but the mystery isn't all that mysterious and the comedy isn't all that hilarious--at least not until Richard Pryor shows up, which is at least halfway through the film. Things definitely pick up from there. Jill Clayburgh, as the love interest, is merely along for the train ride. Wilder and Pryor eventually teamed up for several other films, but they were never as funny together as they are in this one. --Marshall Fine
