VHS Movie Reviews of Rurouni Kenshin - Trust [VHS]Movie Review: Kenshin is the most fascinating character in anime! Summary: 5 StarsSome of the reviews below are for the Rurouni Kenshin TV show (95 episodes). This video "Trust" is actually the first 2 episodes of the 4 episode OVA series. Its sequel "Betrayal" is coming soon. If you can't wait for part two, then you may want to get the manga (comics) or check out the web translations of the manga. www.anipike.com has links to Kenshin translations. This story is about a boy named Shinta who was sold into slavery after his parents died of cholera. Bandits attempt to kill this group of slave traders and slaves. Shinta is saved by master swordsman Hiko, who changes the boy's name to Kenshin and begins training him in the Hiten Mitsurugi style of kenjutsu. By the time Kenshin is about 13, he has advanced to a very high level of swordsmanship. He decides to go off to use his sword to aid the Imperialists in defeating the Shogun, since he feels that the corrupt Shogunate is responsible for the miserable lives of the common people of Japan. Hiko warns him that war will not be as idealistic as Kenshin seems to think it will be, but Kenshin leaves anyway and is hired by Katsura to work as the Ishin Shishi's secret assassin. After beginning this life of killing, the struggle for Kenshin is to remain sane and pure of heart...not an easy thing to do when you are a fifteen-year-old who is assassinating dozens of people. Then Kenshin meets the beautiful and mysterious Tomoe...and you have to see the rest... The character and art style of this anime is different from the TV show style, in an interesting way. The animation is high quality too. And I totally agree with the reviewer below who commented on the quality of the soundtrack: it's a beautiful, haunting score. (The song of the Last Wolves is a favorite) Anyway, this OVA series can stand alone, but personally I think I enjoyed it even more having seen the TV show first. The TV show makes you very curious about Kenshin's past. The TV show is lighter in tone, with more humour, while the OVA is very serious and full of bloodshed. As you watch the OVA, you feel you are entering into Kenshin's memory of his nightmare past. "Trust" and "Betrayal" also make it more clear why Kenshin is so hesitant to get romantically involved with Kaoru and why he is so afraid that he will go over the edge and become the hitokiri battousai again. Kenshin is arguably the most fascinating character in anime!
Movie Review: Ruroni Kenshin Hittoki Batusai need i say more? Summary: 5 StarsI LOVE THIS SERIES! Movie Review: Swordplay, a touching story, and amazing animation. Summary: 5 StarsRurouni Kenshin is truly one of the best examples of why people around the world are so captivated by the art style that is anime. In only 4 episodes, an entire tragic story of a young boy named Shinta is brought to life. Shinta's parents passed away from a disease while Shinta was at a young age. He was sold by slave traders soon after and tragedy once again struck as his new family was cold-heartidly murdered by a gang. Shinta escaped death purly because of sheer coincidence as a mysterious swordsman saved his life. They meet again as Shinta is making graves for his new family. Seeing the same despisement of the times they are living in in as he does, the swordsman hands Shinta a katana and bestows a new name upon him worthy of the swordsman that will bring around the Meiji era-- Kenshin. And so the story begins...As you might've guessed, Rurouni Kenshin is quite bloody. There is quite a bit of blatant violence throughout. But then again, it's just realistic. Like the story, the animation is brilliant and never copped-out. Each frame is brilliant and amazes your eyes. There are no traditional "streaks" from fast moving objects, and so on, in order to cut down on the amount of frames drawn. This makes everything so much more enjoyable. The music is quite simply, amazing. The soundtrack is worth buying if you ever get the chance. It proves that you don't need a vocal song by Megumi Hayashibara to make the music from an anime good. Summing up, if you ever decide to buy only one anime series, make it this Rurouni Kenshin series. It does in 4 episodes what the TV series of the same name did in over 90 episodes.
Movie Review: I am truly happy this got released... finally... Summary: 5 StarsI am not going to even mention how blissful I feel seeing this title for sale. Granted, the Dub-Title of "Samurai X" is extremly cheesy, the Sub-titled version is what I'm going to talk about here. The OAV takes place 10 years BEFORE the TV series (TV series being sold by Media Blaster), and revolves around the a character named Himura Kenshin, a master assasin fighting against the tyranical Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan as part of the Ishin Shi Shi. It involves war, oppresion, deception, love, death, and tragedy. A tale of a man in turmoil with himself, as he believes that by killing, one may protect the innocent. A beautful and heartwrenching tale, wonderfully animated with magnificent fight scenes that godly grace the screen. Though a completely SERIOUS departure from the TV series, which had a bit of humor thrown in here and there, this is definately a good reason for anyone to find out just who WAS Kenshin before the TV series. My recommendation? BUY IT!
Movie Review: Perfect anime Summary: 5 StarsIf you want to see a perfect anime watch Rurouni Kenshin. The ova is the most incredible anime I have ever seen. On top of that the TV series the ova is based off is very cool. The ova has lots of violence and incredible swordplay (the sword play in the ova feels more like a beatifull art style than two guys trying to kill eachother.) Scary, extremly imersive, and a very cool surprise ending. GET IT!
