VHS Movie Reviews of Pride & Prejudice [VHS]

Movie Review: Not an authentic version of Jane Austen's story, but a wonderful movie on its own
Summary: 5 Stars

Those who know and love Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and don't want the classic story to be messed with, may not like this version of the story, but I loved it!

The framework of the story is true to the original - a family with 5 unmarried daughters is hoping to marry all of them off in "good matches." Each character is unique - Elizabeth is witty and intelligent, Jane is beautiful and loving, Mr. Bennett is tolerant and caring, Mrs. Bennett is shallow and juvenile, Mr. Bingley is impressionable and handsome, Mr. Darcy is elegant and strong. The basic plot elements are true to the book.

The timing of the movie differs from the original story (as seen through the clothing, buildings, manners, recreation, and architecture). P&P addicts all have favorite Elizabeths and Greer Garson certainly plays the role differently than the others - but she is endearing and witty. And I don't think there has ever been a Mr. Darcy I didn't fall in love with and Laurence Olivier is a wonderful Mr. Darcy ... regal and aloof but also charming and caring.

If you are looking for an accurate retelling of the story, this is not it. But if you want a pleasant escape with wit and romance then this is it!

Movie Review: Where did they get those costumes?
Summary: 3 Stars

Greer Garson is too old for the part. And they took the costumes right off the set of Gone with the Wind. Tacky, but did Olivier ever play a bad part?

Movie Review: Movie OK, "Features" Superb!
Summary: 2 Stars

I have to tell you I am NOT a fan of "Pride and Prejudice" as an entertaining movie, but there were some choice moments.

HOWEVER, this particular DVD package has a "Special Feature" that just BLEW ME AWAY! WHY this was added onto the movie I have no idea (maybe it was in theatres about the same time as "P&P" came out), but the "Eyes of the Navy" short is just FABULOUS for this Naval aviation buff!

My dad was on the USS Enterprise during WW II, and we live in San Diego. The "Eyes" short features...the USS Enterprise and the Naval Air Station at San Diego as it was in 1940. W-O-W!!! Footage of BT-1's, TBD's, F3F's, etc was priceless! The short is kind of a combo of prideful exhibition and recruitment for Navy airmen, and gives a "realistic" look at Naval Aviation as it was just before we went to war.

I Loved It!

Movie Review: Pride & Prejudice: 1941 version
Summary: 3 Stars

I was hoping this would be the colorized "Turner" version, but it will be a great addition to my video library. It is truly one of the great classics.

Movie Review: Pride and Prejudice 1940 version
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this movie as a gift and watched it tonight. I had seen it years ago on TV and enjoyed it so much I wanted my own copy. This is not the movie for all Pride and Prejudice fans; however, it has some excellent points. The most important point being the acting. In my humble opinion out of all the versions this is the best overall performance. This movie has the only Mrs. Bennet I can tolerate. ;)

The story is kept to the two main characters. I feel this movie shows the honest emotions of those individual characters. As for the missing dialog you can add it yourself if you have read the book. If you have not read the book just put your feet up and enjoy a delightful story.

My next favorite movie is the A&E 1996 version. No laughing in that movie and I do wish they had put a cork in some of those silly girls mouths. Such annoying giggling. My least favorite movie is the 2005 version. Many people believe it is a wonderful movie, but in my opinion it is the one that wanders the furthest from the book. The characters come across as very weak individuals.

There have been critical remarks made about the clothes not being period pieces. If you watch other old movies you will note that Hollywood always managed to bring in the fashions of the day. I often wonder if they were hoping to market the styles.

Please put some of your expectations aside, remember this movie was made over 60 years ago, during war time, and enjoy a simply wonderful show.

Summary of Pride & Prejudice [VHS]

Jane Austen's wonderful novel has been adapted to the screen many times, with this 1940 version representing the golden age of the Hollywood studio era. Greer Garson, then just on the cusp of her stardom, plays the headstrong Elizabeth Bennet, smartest of five daughters who must be married off. Laurence Olivier is that difficult fellow Mr. Darcy, whose mulishness about the Bennet girls begins to thaw when he gets a dose of Elizabeth's sense and sensibility. The film is done up in the glamorous MGM house style, which means we're stuck with the less-than-inspired direction of Robert Z. Leonard (The Great Ziegfeld), redeemed somewhat by a collection of handsome sets (Cedric Gibbons and Paul Groesse won the Oscar for Interior Decoration) and the dandy photography by Karl Freund, one of the greats. Anyone accustomed to the 1995 miniseries version of Pride and Prejudice will need to adjust to the swifter demands of a two-hour movie, and to be sure this version, like the 2005 Keira Knightley remake, simplifies some of Austen's scenes. It's one of the few films, by the way, with Aldous Huxley as a credited screenwriter. Edmund Gwenn is lovely as Mr. Bennet, and Mary Boland brash as Mrs. Bennet; Garson, although MGM liked to corset her in fine-lady roles, manages to let Elizabeth's sauciness come through. Actually, the movie's weak spot is Laurence Olivier's elaborate performance as Darcy, which feels too theatrical. Not that it matters; Austen's story is so good, the film sails through to its delicious finish with all flags flying. --Robert Horton
