Movie Review: Camille Surviver

I am a suviver of Camille. I was stationed in Biloxi, Miss. when it hit the Gulf Coast. I remember a great deal of the tragidy and hardship the storm brought and the many tornatoes which came from that storm. I have never seen any video which did this storm justice. However, I do realize that the videos and equipment were not available at this time to collect this data. This video is about as good as any for what footage can be found. Much more footage is available for later storms which were not as sever as Camille but did more costly damage due to the massive increase in populations and realistate of later times.

Summary of Nova: Hurricane [VHS]

Witness nature's fury as hurricanes Camille and Gilbert crash onto the Gulf coast.

The University of Miami may have named their mascot after these acts of nature, but hurricanes aren't cute and fuzzy. Nova explores these devastating storms in Nova Adventures in Science: Hurricane and shows the heroism found in those who study them--and those who survive them. Fly with meteorologists into the eye of 1988's Hurricane Gilbert and experience the foreboding silence and enclosure within gargantuan walls of clouds. These flights are crucial for understanding the paths these storms take, as well as their intensity and probable destructive force. Then follow those nonscientists who also have firsthand knowledge of hurricanes--survivors of Camille, which swept out of the Gulf of Mexico in 1969 and laid waste to Mississippi. Archival hurricane footage and survivors' reminisces tell a tale of poor preparation and unheard of destruction, which keeps the coasts clear to this day. --Rob Lightner
