VHS Movie Reviews of My GirlMovie Review: Coming-of-age story for girls Summary: 5 StarsI remember bawling myself silly over this movie as a child. When I was given it as a gift and watched it, guess what? More bawling. And yet I was still truly touched by the magic and heart of this moving little story as well as its quirkiness and observations of human lives. This is the tale of a young girl who of all things has grown up in the home of a funeral director... which means lots of dead bodies in the basement. Thus is the setting of a quirky and moving little story with plenty of wonderful acting and great humor. It must be watched with tissues, if you are anything like me, but it is worth it.
Movie Review: Brilliant!! Summary: 5 StarsThis is probably my favourite movie of all time. It came out when I was a kid, and I saw it then as a funny, slightly sad movie about a girl and her best friend. Now I own it again as an adult and can view it in a whole new light, as an insightful, deep movie with a lot more complexity than I ever realised as a child! While we outgrow most of our favourite childhood movies as we get older, I feel like this movie 'grew up with me' in a way. A must-see!!
Movie Review: Sweet, but sad Summary: 4 StarsI cry every time I watch this. Its a very cute film with a great message. But man, I just cant get away with not crying...Anyone young and old should watch this. They'll be sure to love it as much as I do.
Movie Review: Gets me everytime. Summary: 5 StarsMy Girl is a real tearjerker, simply the best! I can watch this film over and over again. Anna Chlumsky had great range for such a young actress, and it's too bad she didn't make a lot of films, but as the main character, Vada Sultenfuss you can't resist that beyond her years charm. Great supporting cast as well, who would have thought Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis could achieve unbelievable chemistry. This film deals with death so get ready to ball your eyes out, my only gripe with the dvd is it should be re-released on widescreen. I highly recommend this wonderful and tender coming of age film, also check the sequel as well. Enjoy!
Movie Review: Great character study and also a time capsule of the 70s Summary: 5 StarsIt's hard being a young girl on the cusp of womanhood, but Vada Sultanfuss' (Chlumsky) life is really complex. She blames herself for her mother's death in childbirth. Her father's (Aykroyd) occupation as the town mortician only gives her a case of "Intern's Syndrome" where she literally believes she's coming down with whatever the cause of death was for the last decedent---the prostate cancer scenes were really sad and funny.
Then, her father hires Shelly (Curtis) as a restoration artist and the plot thickens as the two fall in love. Vada has a love interest of her own--her English teacher--who she pursues by taking a poetry class in the summertime.
WARNING: the film will make you cry in a couple of places. It's very well acted and in my opinion, worth at least one viewing. If you like coming of age films, it may well be worth owning as well.
"My Girl" is definitely a blast from the past. I remember so many of the 1970's references in that film, particularly the fashions and the music. James Newton Howard of Toto fame created the soundtrack for this film and as usual his choices for theme music for particular sections are just spot on.
Well done, overall!
Summary of My GirlA doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Home Alone career, but Anna Chlumsky is unusually sophisticated in her understanding of her character and situation. Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis are perfectly stable as the kids' single parents. Directed by Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). The DVD release has a full-screen presentation, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, and optional French and Spanish soundtracks. --Tom Keogh
