VHS Movie Reviews of Motley Crue: Decade of Decadence '81-'91

Movie Review: The first and still the best collection
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a sad irony that Motley Crue now seem to have more retrospective sets than actual albums now. Which one you buy depends on how much of a fan you are. The 2 "Music to Crash Your Car By" sets are for hardcore fans only, same with "Supersonic & Demonic Relics". "Red White & Crue", while certainly extensive has too many obscure tracks for its own good. And the "Greatest Hits" set is just an expansion of their first (and still best) collection "Decade of Decadence". Released in 1991 to commemorate their first 10 years recording, "Decade" is a solid set that tries to give fans a little bit of everything in one disc that would normally be done in 2 (i.e. hits, live cuts, unreleased tracks, etc.). And it largely succeeds. Of the 15 tracks here, 9 are essential cuts from their first 5 albums (8 if you count the 1991 remake of Home Sweet Home). The remainder being a live version of Kickstart My Heart from the Dr. Feelgood tour, Excellent covers of Tommy Bolin's "Teaser" and the Sex Pistols "Anarchy in the U.K.". And 3 unrelased songs: Angela, Primal Scream, and Rock 'n Roll Junkie. "RnR" could probably be considered a Vince Neil solo track since it appeared on the soundtrack of the movie "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane" and I believe it was credited to Vince on the album even though it was written and recorded by the band. Yes, I know many favorites are omitted here (i.e. Too Young to Fall in Love, Helter Skelter, Same 'ol Situation, Without You, etc.). It's equally strange that when the "GH" album was released just a few years later, it added most of the above but DROPPED all but 1 of the bonus tracks from "Decade". Also suprising is that with their love of 70's hard rock bands the Crue never did a full-on tribute album like their metal comrades Poison, Great White, Def Leppard & Metallica did. Imagine the Crue's take on something like Deep Purple's "Highway Star", "Kickstart My Heart" almost sounds like a speeded-up version of the song anyway

Movie Review: I love this CD
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm glad I could find this CD on Amazon, since my original copy had been stolen. It really is the best of the Crue - the real Crue - Vince, Tommy, Mick and Nikki.

Movie Review: Excellent first decade retrospective
Summary: 4 Stars

As a companion piece to the audio disc also celebrating Motley Crues' first decade of debauchery this is actually pretty good. My reasons for deciding this are;

1) Balance. There is a balance here between all the video clips and the serious interview footage and the stupidity. There are a stack of video clips here - all of them to my knowledge. And they are interspersed with actual serious and considered interview pieces as well as less serious sections where the guys show a bit of their own ways of relaxing. Director Brian Lockwood really deserves credit for chopping and changing things about so that none of it gets tedious.

2) The music itself. On a purely audio level Motley Crue are the quintessential moronic good time band. They had their stumbles during even their first decade (Theatre of Pain and, well, side two of Girls Girls Girls) but their will to conquer and infectious good time grooves won over hordes of hard rock fans. Even many of those who normally hungered after the heavier end of town often had a soft spot for the Crues output because it spoke on such a simple level. They didn't preach, unless the portfolio of having a good time all the time can be considered.

3) The fun of the videos. Some of these videos are truly horrid. But in a weird kind of way this actually makes me more tolerant of the band as they at least are brave enough to release this - if it were me I'd never want anyone to see the clip for Live Wire again. But even the clips that must of made the band squirm are here. And truth be told a number of the clips here haven't dated much in terms of being visual vehicles for what are mostly simple musical tales. My personal faves are the ones from the Dr Feelgood album though for a few laughs there is always Looks That Kill and Smokin' In The Boys Room. And there are certain attractions to Girls Girls Girls....

Recomended viewing for any Motley Crue fans out there who haven't already got it in one format or another.
