VHS Movie Reviews of Mc Q [VHS]

Movie Review: The Duke's Got to Know His Limitations
Summary: 2 Stars

An aging John Wayne looks uncomfortable emulating Clint Eastwood in this routine crime thriller. Released two months after "Magnum Force" blew away the box office, "McQ" (1974) has its virtues - notably director John Sturges' penchant for slam-bang action sequences and Wayne's strong chemistry with Colleen Dewhurst (who makes the most of her disappointingly small role). Still, the Duke fared better when he took his cop routine to London in "Brannigan" (1975).

Movie Review: Good movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I have watched the video once. It needs to be understood that I am an avid fan of the late actor John Wayne. True to expectations, the DVD was in good condition and the movie was very entertaining. Thanks for a good product!

Movie Review: The Duke rides again
Summary: 5 Stars

Strap on your irons, saddle up and get ready for a ride on the wild side.Only your means of transportation isn't horse flesh but a hot muscle car complete with sound affects.
A cop is shot down by a lone gunman. Then another. The lone gunman takes a coffee break(killing must be hard work). Then the gunman is taken out. Bad move! The now deceased gunman happens to be a cop as well.Only this dirty cop has a friend. You guessed it,big John. That is McQ,a cop who sets his own rules. His main quest is to find the killers of his friend and bring them down.
His unorthodox police methods lands him in contention with his boss Eddie Albert. The Duke resigns gives up his second of three pistolas and continues his investigation as a licensed private dick. The fun continues until the final climax.
There's a supprise twist at the end but I'm not telling what it is.Look for the cool machine pistol with a looooong silencer.
As a dude who hung out in the sixties, with a muscle of my own,I loved the sound affects of the big horse engine and tranmission winding up the rpms in the chase scenes, but when big John ends up in a granny car (His muscle car kind of got squished) you still hear the same sound affects.Ooops! Great movie! Five stars for me.

Movie Review: Wayne's new world . . .
Summary: 4 Stars

Screen legend John Wayne mostly appeared in westerns, war films, or as an adventurer or seafaring man. McQ (1974) and Brannigan (1975) are among Wayne's last films, and the only two which feature `The Duke' as a modern day police officer. Of the two, McQ is the superior film. Set in Seattle, and directed by action veteran John Sturges, McQ is a fast-paced, gritty, and violent drama that concerns drugs, and corruption on the force.

It's a rough day for police detective Lon McQ (Wayne), when a number of officers, including a close friend, are gunned down, and McQ finds himself dodging bullets as well. Manny Santiago (Al Lettieri) is the operator of a shipping firm, who is suspected of dealing drugs. The police brass pull McQ off the streets for leaning on Santiago, prompting his resignation from the force. Quickly becoming a private eye, McQ begins working his underworld contacts in search of answers.

McQ's does his best to prevent it, but after a load of confiscated drugs scheduled for disposal is hijacked, things get more complicated, and it becomes clear that members of the police are involved in the theft. With drugs worth over two million dollars missing, the level of violence builds, as McQ's prized Pontiac GTO gets sandwiched between a couple of semi trucks, with him inside. Santiago has gone through a lot of trouble, and he's determined to score more than just some sugar. The film's action highlight is a thrilling car chase on the beach, and a shootout featuring an Ingram MAC-10 machine gun.

The settings and situations may be different, but John Wayne is right at home as a headstrong detective. Even at 67, he has the stamina for a physically demanding role. The story is gritty, well-written, and holds together pretty well, with a few twists that make matters interesting. In addition to Lettieri, the solid supporting cast includes Diana Muldaur, Eddie Albert, Colleen Dewhurst, Clu Gulager, David Huddleston, Roger E. Mosley, Jim Watkins, and Julie Adams. Elmer Bernstein contributes a bold and brassy score. Extras are sparse, but include a featurette about Wayne and the making of the movie, and trailers for McQ and some of Wayne's other films.

Movie Review: The DVD I never received
Summary: 1 Stars

The DVD I never received and have no idea when I will receive any notice of what happened.

Summary of Mc Q [VHS]

Police lieutenant resigns from the force to track down some big dope dealers involved in killing a couple of police officers.
After turning down the role of Dirty Harry, John Wayne made up for lost time by starring in this pretty-good 1974 police drama. Shot on location in a gritty pre-Microsoft Seattle, McQ finds John Wayne butting heads with fellow cops and local crime elements as he investigates the murder of a fellow cop and friend. Wayne is obviously a bit long-in-tooth to be taking on this kind of role, but the script allows for some decent character development, including Colleen Dewhurst in a brief but memorable role as a washed-up barmaid, and the action sequences by veteran director John Sturges still hold up well. For anyone who cares, a key drug-heist sequence was shot in the hospital that now houses Amazon.com's Seattle headquarters. --Kristian St. Clair
