VHS Movie Reviews of Marjoe

Movie Review: The Dangers of Getting Caught-Up In Emotionalism
Summary: 5 Stars

The film "Marjoe" is documented proof that Christians should heed the Bible warning to "Try the spirits..." 1John 4:1. We should also remember that for every gift of God, Satan surely has a counterfeit. Even though they have a Bible in hand, study for yourself, they may be misquoting it. Just because they "speak-in-tongues" doesn't mean it's the true gift of other languages, as was the case in Acts chapter 2, when Jews throughout the Middle East were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. And they brought with them, the many different languages of those various lands. See Acts 2:4-11 for the Bible's own plain explanation of "other" tongues.

The true gift of tongues are known languages throughout the world, not "unknown" as the King James unintentionally has led some to believe. The gift of tongues is simply the ability to speak or witness in a language that was previously "unknown" to the recipient. The word "unknown" is in italics throughout chapters 12-14 of 1Corinthians in the King James translation, meaning not in the original language, but added by the translators. The word "unknown" is omitted from most modern translations, including the New King James Version, because it doesn't exist in the original manuscripts. Unfortunately, many have built whole doctrines around Christians receiving the gift of "unknown tongues." Jesus gave the perfect gift of tongues(languages), at the perfect time, when thousands would be gathered at Jerusalem, speaking dozens of different languages. That is why the gift was so prevalent during the infancy of the Christian movement. That is why He promised His disciples they would receive "power"(dunamis in the Greek), so they could witness. Witness in the many tongues(languages) to the many gathered there. Dunamis/explosive like dynamite power! See Acts 1:8. But more recent tales of missionaries to foreign lands, and even in America's ever growing melting pot, reminds us that the true gifts of the Spirit are very much alive and well.

But back to "Marjoe." Do you think the true gifts are poured out through an admitted deceiver, or are they individuals caught up in emotionalism, and maybe even "false spirits" as has been warned? Even those shown being "slain-in-the-Spirit" by Marjoe? This film is even more pertinent in these last days, when we are warned of "spirits of demons" performing "signs" in the Book of Revelation 16, verses 13 & 14.

The times of great deception are upon us, and "Marjoe" is just a small window into the extent of demonic trickeries going on.

The 1972 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary.

Movie Review: Everyone should see this movie
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie is a great expose of how some prey on religious people. Ordained as a minister when he was four, Marjoe reveals how he was trained to manipulate crowds and create 'religious' highs.

The movie does not deny God, saintly people, or religious experience. What it does do is show us that we should be careful about accepting what others say simply because they seem religious or holy or miracle-workers. Check things out for ourselves and maintain a healthy dose of skepticism. As Christians, we are supposed to have faith but blind faith is another matter - it simply leaves us open to cons - let buyers beware.

I wish it were more readily available so we could use it with our youth.

Movie Review: Raises the bar for Christian believers
Summary: 5 Stars

As a Catholic-faith formation director, I recommend this movie to many of my students ONLY WITH SUPERVISION. It poses hard questions about what the watcher believes and why he/she has come to believe it. On this positive note, the movie "Marjoe" can help Christian viewers to grow in responsible faith. However, it can easily lead men and women of good faith into confusion or despair. "Marjoe" is clearly not an evangelical tool -- but properly used it can be a helpful tool in preparing ourselves to identify and respond to the issue of "crooked Christians."

Movie Review: a breathtakingly honest peek inside another world
Summary: 5 Stars

I very much wish this were more widely available. It's a documentary--an amazingly honest look inside the world of the traveling evangelist--telling the true story of one of America's premiere child evangelists. Conservative Christians may see it as an attack on their faith; sneering liberals may see it as a searing expose of the phoniness of conservative religion. It is neither. Much like "The Apostle," it's an honest look at a world outside mainstream American culture--except this one is not done with actors. Those who are willing to get acquainted, with an open mind, with this particular kind of religion, will find it an astonishingly powerful story, and well worth viewing.

Movie Review: Honest and Soul searching
Summary: 5 Stars

I think this was an excellent movie about the experiences of a man who was trained beginning as a toddler to be a "miracle" child evangelist. It details his emotional soul searching as he came of age and began to consider accountibility and responsibility toward others to be honest and truthful. I do come from a faith base and do believe in the miracles of healing, but I think Mr. Gortner tried to speak from his experience and not negatively portray those who were touched through his ministry. His is more an expose' of those who prey on the flock and exploit them for their own benefit. He does not rule out a power greater than ourselves that is able to touch human beings in a real and healing way.
