VHS Movie Reviews of Living Yoga's Power Strength Yoga for Beginners [VHS]Movie Review: VERY fast-moving practice for intermediate to advanced Summary: 4 StarsIn this power yoga workout, instructor Rodney Yee moves very quickly, even faster than in any other vinyassa-style practices I've done. In particular, he transitions through the sun salutation series so fast that even those familiar with the poses in the series (which is a MUST) will have some trouble keeping up with Yee's pace. You will perform MANY downward facing dogs in this practice, as Yee frequently returns to this posture as a resting pose between more challenging moves. Once he gets to the arm balances, Yee moves a bit more slowly, allowing time to get into more strenuous postures such as Pendulum and Crow and to hold these poses briefly. I've been practicing yoga at home for about 2 1/2 years now, and I definitely wasn't able to complete all of the poses in this practice. However, I felt that it offered me an excellent opportunity to expand my current practice to more challenging poses.
Movie Review: Pretty good but not for beginners Summary: 4 StarsThis is a good Yoga work-out and I can recommend it. I like Rodney Yee's book and his dvd's. However, it's fast paced and you have to have some yoga experience to really do the exercises and keep up with the tempo. Don't forget that the word "Power" is in the title for a reason.
Movie Review: Very Challenging Vinyasa Flow for Upper Body Strength Summary: 5 StarsThis third tape in Rodney Yee's Power yoga for Beginners series is definitely the most challenging by far. It has a really nice flow that keeps the heat in your body and the sweat flowing out of it:) I would also agree with other reviewers in that this is definitely more of an intermediate routine. While it is only 25 or so minutes long, it contains tough arm balances that are definitely not beginner poses. Perhaps the length is why it is under the "Beginners" umbrella. To me it's more like a great intermediate strength practice for an intermediate practitioner who wants a shorter practice. If you compare it to Baron Baptiste's or Bryan Kest's tougher tapes or Mark Blanchard's super hard tapes it is definitely much easier, plus there aren't pushups thrown in between the up dogs and down dogs of the vinyasas. I have just over 60 yoga videos and I would have to say that this video (along w/ Rodney's other "Power Yoga For Beginners Videos) are very high up on my list of favorite tapes to practice with. As mentioned, the length makes this tape and the others in the set very easy to fit in to anyone's schedule and there is no doubt that it's better to practice more days per week for a shorter time than fewer days for a longer time, so this tape series is wonderful as you can alternate between them which keeps things fresh and also effects your body in different ways. By the way, if you are ready for a longer, powerful intermediate yoga practice then another video I'd highly recommend is "Baptiste Power of Yoga" with Sherri Baptiste Freeman (see my in depth review of her video on Amazon under Sherri Baptiste Freeman) Namaste
Movie Review: Not quite for Beginners--More for Intermediates! Summary: 5 StarsThis tape really gives me a great upper body workout. Me and my wife first bought the AM/PM yoga series about a year ago. I quickly got bored with those tapes since they were not particularly challenging to me after a while. I decided to move on to the Power Yoga series, expecting to further improve my yoga techniques while getting a great upper body workout with improved flexibility. I first bought the "Power Yoga for Stamina" and enjoyed it very much. For more variety, I bought this video. I bought the third volume, "Flexibility" at a later time. This tape is certainly the most challenging of the three Power Yoga tapes. You do upward and downward facing dog poses until your shoulders get so sore they can't move! You do these side arm bends which challenge your balance! And there's three different poses where you support yourself only your arms! But don't be scared away: you'll steadily improve with these poses every time you practice. I can finally do the arm lifts without much difficulty. And you WILL sweat after trying this video. If you're new to yoga, I highly recommend that you try the AM/PM yoga first. Then buy the "Power Yoga for Stamina". It's an excellent introduction to Power yoga and is a summation of all three videos. If you're advanced: get all three videos and practice all three in a row(never tried). The series seems to be designed to work this way. The first video (Stamina) is essentially a warmup with the middle video (Strength) as an intense workout with the final volume (Flexibility) to cool down your muscles. Yes, it is fast pace, but you need to watch at least once without exercising to observe and then practice the tape a couple times before you get familiar with the poses. And the "Stamina" volume already introduces you to many of the poses done here. An excellent buy!
Movie Review: way too fast....not what I would consider yoga Summary: 1 StarsI bought this based on a friend's recommendation...but I wouldn't call it yoga. He moves way too quickly...no time to get into poses for advanced people, and no learning of poses for beginners.
Summary of Living Yoga's Power Strength Yoga for Beginners [VHS]Another day, another downward-facing dog. In the second of the Power Yoga for Beginners series, Rodney Yee focuses on the spine, upper back, and abdomen. Naturally, there are a lot of dogs here, but they're integrated into a vigorous, dynamic sequence designed to build arm strength and good upper-body posture. Sun salutations flow into a series of challenging strength poses, including arm balances and the pendulum and eastern plank positions. It's quite a workout--the minute or so of shavasana that concludes the tape seems woefully short! In theory, the movement from one exercise to the next is smooth and seamless, helping you integrate the mind, body, and breath and engage in the present moment. In practice, you may find yourself hitting the pause button from time to time, at least at first. In fact, that's not a bad idea; power yoga moves quite quickly, and it could be easy to hurt yourself when trying out an unfamiliar or difficult pose. Like all yoga tapes, this one works best as a supplement to class with an experienced instructor. --Mary Park
