VHS Movie Reviews of Last Emperor [VHS]

Movie Review: The Fly In The Ointment
Summary: 2 Stars

The one bad apple in The Criterion Collection Blu-ray releases. There is hardly any difference between the blu-ray edition and the SD DVD edition. All the special features in the SD DVD you get in the blu-ray in a digipak (a really crappy one at that), however, you do not get the extended edition of the movie that came in the SD DVD. The one saving grace is that on amazon the Blu-ray is cheaper that SD DVD. I recommend that you pay a few dollars more for the SD edition which comes in a really nice digipak and a better booklet thats on the blu-ray.

The news is that the transfer was approved by the cinematographer - what was he thinking?!?! Despite the crappy blu-ray transfer, the aspect-ratio is not what was in the original release.

By the way, the movie is great and you will enjoy it

Movie Review: Do NOT order this!
Summary: 1 Stars

I cannot express how LIVID I am over being duped into buying what I thought was the widescreen theatrical cut of THE LAST EMPEROR on Blu-Ray.

From the criterion site: "We do not windowbox Blu-ray (-) movies."

Incorrect. The aspect ratio has been changed. Sides trimmed off slightly. I don't care if it was with auteur approval. I don't care if Jesus approved of this trim job. If I wanted a cut, I'd bring the thing to a barber!

For $30, there should have been two discs: the 'theatrical' release in widescreen, and whatever other versions y'all felt inclined to release.

This reveals bald contempt for the customer and simple disregard for cinema.

Do NOT order this.

(A phenomenal movie with a history of being butchered in VHS/DVD releases.)

Movie Review: Great Movie, a Must see!
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is great, has lots of features, the movie is quiet long but you wont regret. comes in a hard see through box.

Movie Review: Spectacular Film In Spectacular High Definition
Summary: 5 Stars

Although I will watch the director's cut next time on DVD, I can say seeing this film for the first time it really looks spectacular and the HD version is so clear it looks like it was filmed yesterday. Great movie.

Movie Review: Great Film, Lousy Blu Ray
Summary: 2 Stars

This has got to be one of the worst transfers to blu-ray I have seen. I was so disappointed in the lack of quality in this edition that I turned it off less than half way through. What a shame to treat a great film like this. It deserved better. Much better.

Summary of Last Emperor [VHS]

Bernardo Bertolucci does the nearly impossible with this sweeping, grand epic that tells a very personal tale. The story is a dramatic history of Pu Yi, the last of the emperors of China. It follows his life from its elite beginnings in the Forbidden City, where he was crowned at age three and worshipped by half a billion people. He was later forced to abdicate and, unable to fend for himself in the outside world, became a dissolute and exploited shell of a man. He died in obscurity, living as a peasant in the People's Republic. We never really warm up to John Lone in the title role, but this movie focuses more on visuals than characterization anyway. Filmed in the Forbidden City, it is spectacularly beautiful, filling the screen with saturated colors and exquisite detail. It won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. --Rochelle O'Gorman
