I loved this series when I was a kid. It seems a bit "hokey" now that I'm an adult, but it's still an enjoyable, nostalgic trip to watch!
The Ripper (airdate Sep 13, 1974) - After solving supernatural mysteries in two TV movies (the Night Stalker and The Night Strangler) that scared up monster ratings, intrepid reporter Carl Kolchak made his series debut, appropriately enough, on Friday the 13th. Recalling elements from those two films and Kolchak creator Jeff Rice's original novel, this eerie episode kicked off the spooky show's ABC run by putting the Chicago-based Kolchak on the blood-spattered trail of a ripper whose first name just might be Jack.
The Zombie (airdate Sep 20, 1974) - Chicago mobsters in the series' second episode are terrified of the title charcter, a zombie controlled by a voodoo priestess. This episode marks the first of John Fiedler's three delightful appearances as Gordon "Gordy the Ghoul" Spangler, a morgue attendant who runs a lottery based on corpse statistics. It also contains one of the show's most chilling moments - Kolchak trying to render the sleeping zombie helpless by filling its mouth with salt and sewing its lips shut.
