VHS Movie Reviews of Kathy Smith's Fat Burning BreakthroughMovie Review: Been using this video for over three years and plan to continue. Summary: 5 StarsI recall when initally started doing step vidoes there was Denise Austin and Kathy Smith. I enjoy Kathy Smith so much more. I initally started with her 'Step Workout' 10 years ago, then progressed to the 'Power Step Workout' (both great workouts). However these videos were VHS and I needed a DVD one, so I purchsed this one. I love this DVD! I feel so good after I do it. Living in a four season climate, and typically excercising in the morning, I love the convenience of rolling out of bed and putting this workout in. Other forms of excercise I do include running, walking, and yoga. I probably do this video four to five times a week during the winter, less the rest of the year. It does get tiring to watch the same thing alot, but my motivation to continue doing it, is the good feeling I have afterward. One thing I did to vary the DVD from getting monotonous would do the step workouts first, and then the arms. Or do the second step workout and then first one. The DVD menu makes this very easy to do. I enjoy the Kathy always incorporates a bit of arms and abs with her step workouts; not just focusing on the lower body. I also try to hold my abs in during certain parts of the routine to strenghten them; she says this in the video.
I recently had a baby and was unable to do the video after a certain point, but I am eager to get back to it. The routine may be confusing at first, but since I was familiar with Smith's style, I knew I would be challenged and eventually get the routine down. I prefer using a step for this workout, doing it on the floor doesn't get me sweating enough. I used to make my step very high, but it was bulking me up to much, so I lowered it. I got a nice balance. I highly recommend this video. The fact that you can do a half hour work out, when on a time constraint, is what keeps me doing this video too. I tried one of Kathy's other videos, kickboxing, not for me. Even though it was Kathy, I couldn't get it. So if you like stepping and like Kathy Smith, I highly recommend this DVD to vary your workout.
Movie Review: Great quick workout Summary: 5 StarsI do the 18 minute workouts when I short on time and do a short yoga tape (sara ivanhoe). This workout will have you working hard! I sweat with both or just one of the workouts. The step for me were not too dancy but
then again, I'm used to cathe friedrich and Those are so tough I only do
them when I'm up for it. The weight section in good as is the abs. the only thing is you have to do your own cooldown if you do the just the one
workout on it's own like I do. Other then that Kathy is a great instructor
I like the outdoor setting and the fact that you don't need a step to
to the workout.
Movie Review: It's Gotta Work... Summary: 4 StarsThe step routines are killer and, therefore, have to be beneficial for burning calories and building leg muscles. I always like it when a DVD breaks the exercise routines into several segments so that, depending on the time you have at the moment, you have multiple options regarding your workout (from as little as 4 minutes with the abs section, and/or two separate 18 minutes with the step aerobics/brief target-training on the arms, and/or warm up & cool down segments as well). And you don't have to have an official step piece like the ones they use (although their ideal if you prefer to follow along exactly as displayed); I get along fine with a regular Rubbermaid-type small, step stool. I just have to adjust some of the moves since I can't step wide to the left & right. But even when I have to replace certain moves with the basic ones, I'm getting plenty of exercise still. In fact, my step stool measures 9 inches high and I saw on one of her other intro DVDs that one should progress up to 8 inches, so I don't feel like I'm missing out at all when I need to take brief breaks in between or when I replace some of those moves for the "basic" ones again. Anyway, you're going to sweat and you're going to feel your legs getting stronger. It's a great exercise DVD!
Movie Review: my favorite aerobic instructor and dvd Summary: 5 Starsthis dvd is broken down into warmup, aerobic + weights, aerobic + weights, floor work, cooldown. this is great because you can do both sets of aerobic + weight or just one and skip to the floorwork and cooldown, depending on how much time you have and your fitness level. her cues are very easy to follow and directions are clear. she is down to earth and encouraging without being overly enthusiastic, but also does a great job at keeping up the energy level. i particularly like this one because it lacks all the deep knee bends and lunges that are so tough on the knees. overall my best workout video among dozens!
Movie Review: A Really Great Workout! Summary: 5 StarsThis is the first time that I really felt motivated enough to write a review. I love this DVD. I workout often, and I have problems finding workouts that challenge me enough. I also have three children, so time is limited. This DVD solves both problems for me. A great challenging workout and I can choose the time. If I don't have much time, I only do the first wave. It is quite the workout by itself. If I have more time, I go further into wave 2. Honestly, I have yet to make it through wave 2. I've only been using it for a couple weeks, and I haven't built up enough stamina! I'm getting there. This was exactly what I needed to rev me up again!
Summary of Kathy Smith's Fat Burning BreakthroughThe secret to breaking through weight-loss plateaus is challenging your body to work out at a higher intensity than it's used to, to "overload" in fitness parlance. Kathy Smith's Fat Burning Breakthrough presents two 18-minute step workout "waves" that progress through ever-harder intensities, building to a peak, then gradually tapering down. The two sessions can be done singly or combined into a 46-minute workout. Smith's all-female demonstrators show modifications for higher and lower intensity throughout, and one does the whole workout without a step for a much easier version. The choreography is more complex and the overall intensity is higher than most of Smith's videos, making this video most appropriate for intermediate exercisers. A brief weight workout follows each cardio session, and at the end is an abdominal and back routine, and a stretch. Smith, as always, is safe and motivating, with excellent technique. Her fans appreciate that her videos contain no screaming, no frenzy, no endless counting, no distracting camera work. Although Smith is motivating, the music here is merely innocuous, barely keeping the beat. The setting is a lovely outdoor park scene. --Joan Price
