VHS Movie Reviews of Journey of HopeMovie Review: Over The Hills of Hope Summary: 5 StarsJOURNEY OF HOPE reminds me of the Sound of Music. However, the only similarity is the Swiss Alps that represent the path for a better life. There is no sweeping opening scene of Julie Andrews gloriously singing, "the hills are alive...," but the Kurdish culture represented with traditional ritual and song. This award winning film won best foreign language film of 1990, and is yet an excellent representation of the plight of the immigrant.
Haydar (Necmettin Cobanoglu) and Meryem (Ner Surer) leave Turkey for Switzerland. With merely a postcard from a Haydar's distant cousin, Carmel, they sacrifice their present living conditions in Maras where they work the field, tend lambs, and a goat in order to live the same prosperous life like Carmel. Meryem almost changes her mind of leaving because she wants to bring one child. Haydar agrees to take one child, the mischievous Mehmet Ali (Emin Sivas) after being convinced by Haydar's father that boy may be their root for the future. They begin their journey, but they are not the only immigrants seeking a new life. There are others, and their plight turns out to be smuggling ring of illegal immigrants who are supposedly contracted to work at chocolate factory in Switzerland.
JOURNEY OF HOPE is a film where the characters and plotline are strong. It is a heart wrenching and tragic movie. It is the type of film where one is hopeful that the family and the people they meet along the way will make it through, but as the film progresses, nature as well as the border patrol appear to be their obstacles. Despite those factors, they brave the treacherous mountainous terrain and the cold extremities and tread forward. Viewers may empathize with the characters and root them on their journey. But the film is shocking, surprising, and unpredictable in the end.
Writer and Director Xavier Koller and cinematographer Elemer Ragalyi present a finely crafted film. JOURNEY OF HOPE is indeed a respectful presentation about immigration that is compassionately portrayed.
Movie Review: This movie was awesome Summary: 5 StarsAlthough it is an older movie, I think "Journey Of Hope" is one of my favorite Turkish movies. It is a tear-jerker!! You really learn how to appreciate the Turkish culture and people in this movie-I know I did. This is very appropiate for families, but need I remind you, you will be watching subtitles(unless you are Turkish). Too bad there are not many Turkish movies that make it into the video stores.
Movie Review: Devastating film about the human nature ! Summary: 5 StarsThe swiss director Xaver Koller made one of the ten best film of the last eighties with this tragic saga , through the meticulous description of the Odyssey of a family of Kurds who attempt to leave their Turkish seeking the promised land of Switzerland . Gripping picture not recommended for children due its subject matter extremely harsh.
Absorbing , poignant and brutal movie ; a superb and mature film with all the possible realism and even more .
Oscar winning as Best Foreign picture .
I expect its immediat release in DVD format .
Movie Review: Oh dude :-( Summary: 5 StarsEver think the grass is greener on the other side; think again. This foreign film truly makes you respect the people who migrated to other countries with the hopes of a better life. Some found it, others did not, many went the way of the lead characters in this one. When you're feeling sad, don't watch this movie or you're gonna be tempted to order a shot of prozac behind your eyeball.
Movie Review: Deterrent Summary: 4 StarsThis story ,of the almost impossible difficulty of illegal immigration, was probably subsidized by the Swiss Government. As a deterrent, it might have been shown all over the Arab world.I hope a few stay home -as miserable as it is- because they saw this movie. The Turks and the Kurds I saw them fighting, even in the streets of Berlin!Europe does not need to import ethnic strife. It got enough problems of his own.I hope therefore ,that this well made movieserves as a deterrent
Summary of Journey of HopeXavier Koller's 1990 drama concerns a Turkish family optimistically leaving a threadbare existence in its native country and setting off on a harrowing journey for better luck in Switzerland. The film is relentless in every sense, in its blow-by-blow portrayal of the characters selling their possessions, traveling an illegal route used by other emigrants, falling in with a cluster of smugglers who do not have their best interests at heart, crossing the Alps on foot (an extended sequence that quickly earned the film its must-see reputation). After all that, they still have to confront Swiss authorities. Brutal and tough going, the heart of the film is not so much the accumulating despair and misery but the strengthening relationships of the central characters. Koller's film, based on a true story, becomes more than the sum of its episodic nightmares. In an unexpected way, it becomes a beacon of true hope and humanity. --Tom Keogh
