VHS Movie Reviews of Joe Scrugg's Joe's First VideoMovie Review: Joe Scruggs My First Video Summary: 5 StarsThis VHS is timeless. We have watched it every night before bed since it arrived. This video has nine great songs put to a variety of animations including claymation and cut and paste. The stories keep the children interested in the video. The songs are wonderful, my children 3 and 5 sing them and finish each other's phrases. I will definitely buy more Joe Scruggs.
Movie Review: If you love Hap Palmer you'll love Joe Scruggs! Summary: 5 StarsThis video is really cute. Joe has a nice mellow singing voice. The animation is nice and the drawings are really cute. The songs are really good and some are quite catchy. Sometimes real kids are in front of a green screen with cool stuff going on around them. Joe says, "sing along" but it's hard because you don't know the words (you'll have to watch it many times to learn the words). I wish that this was closed captioned so that you could put the words on the screen, but it isn't (perhaps the newer version is closed captioned now??).
The songs are: Late Last Night, This Little Piggy, By The Way, Belly Button, What Do They Do With The Children, Skateboard, In The Freezer, Goo-Goo-Ga-Ga, Under The Bed.
This is the only Joe Scruggs video we've seen. I didn't realize there were others. I am definitely going to check them out. FYI, I actually have an older tape then what is pictured here. It is called "Joe's First Video: Songs & Smiles" dated 2000. It's the very same video (same songs) with just a different cover. So, if you are trying to find a used copy of this on auction or some place, you might want to check for Songs & Smiles too. Please read my other reviews for more childrens videos.
Movie Review: almost didn't buy it - sooooo glad I did! Summary: 4 StarsI had originally decided not to buy this tape because although we LOVE the other Joe Scruggs tape (Deep in the Jungle) all the reviews of this tape on Amazon. com tore it apart (where did all those reviews go anyway - I can't find them anymore) My almost 3 and almost 5 year old thoroughly enjoy all the Joe Scrugg CD's - the music and lyrics are so original and fun! We finally decided to take our chance on this video and it's GREAT! If your kids already know the words to the songs, it's so exciting to see them animated on video. (everything is done in a cartoon form) In some cases, like the goo goo ga ga song, it actually works better in animation form, than it does in the Live in Concert format. For Joe Scruggs music fans, my husband and I definitely recommend this tape. We all couldn't take our eyes off it until it ended!
Movie Review: Memory Maker Summary: 4 StarsAlthough the graphics are simple, the lyrics will make memories for your children. I am reordering this video as my sons, age 10 & 14, still remember the cute, catchy folk songs from their childhood Joe Scruggs video. They actually want the video back into our family library. You'll be humming them too!
Summary of Joe Scrugg's Joe's First VideoRecording artist Joe Scruggs makes his film debut with this delightfully winsome collection of sing-along songs that is certain to tickle pint-sized funny bones. Those who are familiar with Scruggs know that his soothing voice and imaginative songs captivate toddlers and preschoolers, while his subtle, quirky humor engages grade school kids. This winning formula has earned him accolades, including two Parents' Choice Awards. Joe's First Video allows Scruggs's songs to come alive as lyrics are paired with real and animated action. Nine songs make up the 30-minute program, including his ever-popular "Late Last Night." Kids will relate to songs like "Under Your Bed" and "What Do They Do with the Children?" that depict common childhood experiences, like worrying about what's under the bed or losing mom and dad in the grocery store. In Scruggs's world, kids are not belittled or dealt with in a condescending manner; rather, they are affirmed and made to feel that all things are possible. And, lest parents think there is nothing here for them, Scruggs makes a slam dunk with his certain charmer, "By the Way." This humorous ballad tells the story of every mom's morning struggle to usher her kids out the door, when Junior suddenly remembers a handful of items he is supposed to bring to school that day. Expect repeat showings. --Lynn Gibson
