Movie Review: "a moving film that captures the message well"
Summary: 5 Stars

This rock opera by Rice and Webber is a wonderful presentation of the message of the Christian Gospel. Over the centuries there have been few ways that the message has been presented. This production should go a long way in presenting the Gospel message in a compelling way to what an age that many sociologists call "post-Christian" The music is wonderful and the lyrics closely capture the importance and message of this last week in Christ's life. Director Norman Jewison's concept of flashing before our eyes many historical paintings of Christ's cruxifixion during the song: "Gethsemane" is especially powerful. As a clergyman I have used this production a number of times to present the Gospel message to young people many of whom did not see the relevance of the Gospel for their lives. This is a great work which should move many with the Gospel message for generations to come.

Movie Review: Simply reprehensible.

For anyone who has any respect for the Christ figure, as a Christian or not, this production should leave your perplexed at best and horribly disappointed at worst. The film, particularly the story's lyrics, is clearly the production of someones who have absolutely no insight into the story of Christ. There is nothing that this film contributes beyond some good music. Christ as he is portrayed here is hopelessly off the mark. How ANYONE could give this film more than one star totally amazes me. The question that plagues me is: why? Why was this musical made? I have great respect for Weber and most of his work is truly admirable, but what was he thinking, what was the point of this. I have not seen the stage production, but I am sure that I would dismiss it as well as this film. And why does Jewison perpetuate the unfounded myth that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute? Who did the research for this work? This work is such a mishmash of banalities. A total embarrassment. I couldn't wait for it to be over.
Christ was doubtless a magnificent personage, a man of supreme wisdom and inspiration - and yet, NONE of that comes through in this production. This could have been a thousand times better. The representation of Christ succeeded only in approximating what we have feebly imagined Christ to look like. Of course, in reality, Christ was a brown-eyed Middle Eastern Jew, not a blue-eyed blonde! And what message are we to take from Judas being portrayed by a black man. YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! If not for the music and the show's reputation, I am sure I would have turned off this movie within 15 minutes.

Summary of Jesus Christ Superstar [VHS]

Ted Neeley makes for a wimpy looking Jesus in Norman Jewison's screen adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice "rock opera," which was a smash on stage in the early '70s. Jewison (Other People's Money) adds some good exterior settings in the desert, but Webber and Rice's dialogue-free story (everything is sung, as in a real opera), with its quasi-profundities about the inner demons of principal figures in the life of Christ, is the real hook. Yvonne Elliman sings the show's best-known song, "I Don't Know How to Love Him." --Tom Keogh
