VHS Movie Reviews of Ipcress File [VHS]Movie Review: Ipcress File DVD Summary: 5 StarsMichael Caine has a cult following almost for this DVD and the other two that go with it.
I enjoyed it and then sold it on the Internet.
Movie Review: the albanian, the decoy, the mole Summary: 5 StarsThe good old days of deception and brainwashing. The zenith of the obscure and analytical secret services of the eastern block.
His name is Harry Palmer: he's cocky, defiant and effective. He thinks he has one mission; actually he has two.
Movie Review: A Superb Spy Thriller Summary: 5 StarsThere are very few movies that are better than the books they were based on. This is one of them.
This is the story of Harry Palmer, lover of gourmet food and classical music, a former British soldier released from prison in exchange for serving his country in undercover operations. Transferred to a new department, he and his fellows must find out who is kidnapping British scientists and rendering them unable to do any further work. As he doggedly pursues the truth, tries to avoid getting caught in the conflict between his old and new boss, and wonders just who is working for whom, things become more and more confused and dangerous -- until the day when he finds out the very hard way just what the bad guys are doing to the scientists.
An excellent performance by Michael Caine, good supporting actors, fine black and white cinematography, and a good score rounds it all out. Don't let the fact that this is imported from Russia throw you. It plays fine on my Region 1 DVD player, and it has the original English soundtrack, as well as a soundtrack dubbed in Russian. So get it, and enjoy.
Movie Review: spy story thriller Summary: 4 StarsMichael Caine's Harry Palmer is insolent and effective and anti-establishment and a good cook. What a combination. It certainly works for this cold war thriller.
Movie Review: The Ipcress File Summary: 5 StarsMichael Caine performs an outstanding role in this drama, as usual! The story keeps the viewer guessing how it will end. Great film!
Summary of Ipcress File [VHS]In the spy-crazed film world of the 1960s, Len Deighton's antihero Harry Palmer burst onto the scene as an antidote to James Bond. Here was a British spy who had a working-class accent, horn-rimmed glasses, and above all really didn't want to be a spy in the first place. As portrayed by Michael Caine, Palmer was the perfect antithesis to Sean Connery's 007. Unlike the globetrotting spy's exotic locales, Palmer's beat is cold, rainy, and dreary London, where he spends his days and nights in unheated flats spying on subversives. He does charm one lady, but she's no Pussy Galore--just a civil servant he works with, sent to keep an eye on him. Eventually he's assigned to get to the bottom of the kidnapping and subsequent "brain draining" of a nuclear physicist, all the while being reminded by his superiors that it's this or prison. Things begin to get pretty hairy for Harry. Produced by Harry Saltzman in his time off from the James Bond series, the film also features a haunting score by another Bond veteran, composer John Barry. --Kristian St. Clair
