Movie Review: Hope and Glory Summary: 5 StarsHope and Glory
An excellent movie that I received in the estimated delivery time. This will encourage me to purchase more items in the future.
Movie Review: a boy's view of war - a classic and unique film Summary: 5 StarsI can't think of another film quite like this one with its flawlessly realized POV of a boy at home during Britain's WWII. The acting is entirely excellent, the cinematography is grand, the use of music is just right, in other words, not saturating the film in sentimentality. It's both poignant and very funny in an wholly realistic way.
After I got the DVD I wasn't that excited about seeing it again, only vaguely remembering that it had rec'd terrific reviews. When I finally ran out of other things to see, saw it and loved it so much I turned around and watched it again.
Only quibble--would love to have had an audio commentary from the director, would have been fascinating as the film is somewhat autobiographical.
Movie Review: This is a classic and I've wanted it for a long time! Summary: 5 StarsIt's amazing to see how people react to war and this is most certainly a classic to have. To view this through the eyes of everyday life in England during the war and how it was for them is a movie for keeps.
Movie Review: British born Summary: 3 StarsBritish born blokes, like my ex-wife who experienced the Blitz, say this movie is just like it was. I wasn't there but can still feel and envy the era as I might have been.
Summary of Hope & GloryThis winning 1987 epic written and directed by John Boorman (Deliverance, The General) serves as a picaresque and semi-autobiographical remembrance of a boy's coming of age during the Second World War. Exhibiting a defiant and humorous take on life during the London blitz, the family of the young boy at the center of the story (Sebastian Rice-Edwards) is a close-knit and resilient bunch, undeterred in the face of the war and reveling in each other even as they hide from the incessant bombing. To be sure, there are some poignant moments in this childhood reminiscence, such as when the boy's older sister (Sammi Davis) falls in love with a Canadian, becomes pregnant, and marries him, only to see him taken away by the military police. And the boy's mother (Sarah Miles) serves as a strong influence in the boy's life as she leads her family through this tumultuous time. The majestic sweep of the film is contrasted with so many comic moments as the people in town go about the mundane details of their daily lives yet also engage in the most absurd rituals in dealing with the onslaught of German artillery, from taking the air raids for granted to wearing gas masks at school. Boorman doesn't dwell on the horrors of war; instead he celebrates the richness and resilience of the people he remembers so fondly. An adventurous and nostalgic slice of life, Hope and Glory is a superb and memorable film. --Robert Lane
