VHS Movie Reviews of Holiday Affair (1949) [VHS]Movie Review: Great with a plate of those "special" brownies! Summary: 3 StarsThis movie is good, but it's even better when you know the back story: Robert Mitchum made this shortly after his release from prison, where he did time on a--gasp!--marijuana possession charge. Which is so totally the character, because he's a likable dude with slitty, puffy eyes who doesn't have a steady job, thinks deep but sometimes disjointed thoughts, and eats a lot of junk food at the city zoo (where he talks to squirrels).
So it's no surprise that war widow Connie (Janet Leigh) finds him alluring, compared to her El Boro lawyer fiance, who is so predictable you just want to fall asleep...and not that mellow, contemplative/creative kind of sleep that stoners enjoy. (So I hear.)
Connie's kid "Timmy" brings them together over a contrived incident involving a train set. Of course, Timmy prefers that Mom hook up with Mitchum (who knows useful information about pet turtles)over a mind-numbing life with a stepdad like Carl.
The acting is good all the way around--even Timmy isn't as insufferable as most child actors from that era--and it's cool to see Noir-King Mitchum explore his comedic range.
Hmmm....what will Connie do? Stick with straight-arrow Carl, who will provide her and Timmy with a life of comfort and stability ? Or run off with Mitchum, who harbors disturbingly vague plans about making a fortune designing "boats...but not REALLY BIG boats!"
We all know what most women would do. (I mean, come on. It's Robert Mitchum.) But if Connie is smart, she'll hang onto Carl's card. You never know when you might need the name of a good lawyer!
Movie Review: A wonderful Christmas movie that deserves a better transfer Summary: 3 StarsI first saw this movie when I was about 11 years old and fell in love with it; I am 39 now.
This is by far one of my favorite Christmas movies. If you have not seen it yet be forwarn it is a love story based around a Christmas setting but it is worth watching. It has an awesome story. It was filmed in the 40's and I really love the settings of Christmas of the 40's and 50's and 60's. Towns really went out on the decorations and setting up a Christmas theme. I love seeing the old cars and trucks in these movies also. People had class back then that is not present today.
I am dissapointed in the copy that Warners use for this DVD release. The quaility of the film differs off and on throughout the running. It is plagued with artifacts and dust and scratches. The transfer also suffers from audio drops and hisses. Now I normally would expect this of a film of this age. I do not expect it to be perfect since it was made in the 40's and this is after all 2009. But I know that there are better transfers of this film. TCM just showed this on their channel a few weeks ago. The trasfer they used is by far better than the transfer used on this DVD. The picture on TCM is cleaner and brighter and the audio has no drops at all nor any hisses. For this reason I give this release a 3 star review. If Warners had used the trasfer that they gave TCM to use, I would have given it a 5 star review.
If anyone from Warners happen to read this, please re-release this using a better trasfer of this film. This film is a classic and deserves a better release
Movie Review: Holiday Affair Summary: 5 StarsThis older holiday movie I did not recall. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Too bad the film makers do not still make clean and entertaining movies like
of yester-year!
Movie Review: Enjoyable older movie Summary: 4 StarsI had never heard of this movie until I saw it on Amazon. I really enjoyed the movie. It's a great older movie.
Movie Review: Undiscovered Holiday Classic Summary: 5 StarsUndiscovered by most, but luckily discovered by me this Christmas. I love old movies for their glimpse back in time, the clothes, the way they talked, the integrity that people tried to live by. While some old movies have bland plots that don't keep my interest, this did because of the depth of the screenwriting and insight into what's important in life. I'll watch this again year after year!
Summary of Holiday Affair (1949) [VHS]One of the lesser holiday movies, this 1949 comedy stars Janet Leigh as a war widow who can't afford to buy her son a toy train for Christmas. A veteran (Robert Mitchum) who happens to be standing by in a department store overhears her plight and offers to purchase the toy, thus setting into motion a series of funny complications. Wendell Corey plays Leigh's suspicious, condescending boyfriend, whose jealousy compounds Mitchum's problems, and Harry Morgan is very good as a night-court judge trying to make sense of everything that happens. The movie didn't do so well at the box office at the time of its release, but it has gained an affectionate fan base over the years. Don't expect Miracle on 34th Street, but as a spirited lark for Yuletide, this is a lot of fun. --Tom Keogh
