VHS Movie Reviews of Glengarry Glen Ross [VHS]

Movie Review: "Put that coffee down! Coffee is for closers only."
Summary: 5 Stars

Guns. Explosions. Car chases. Sex. Damsels in distress. Child sidekicks. MTV-like madness. These are the things that Glengarry Glen Ross DOESN'T have. So what makes it so great? Because it's a character-driven story that relies strictly on dialogue and personalities. There is no need for gunfights and car chases; the characters and the dialogue in this movie are what makes it so captivating. These characters are raunchy and obscene; it's hard to either love them or despise them.

Based on the Tony Award-winning play by David Mamet, it is a story about desperation, distrust, greed, and real estate. There are six main characters, and they easily make the film for their hard-hitting attitudes. Pacino, Lemmon, Harris, Arkin, Spacey, and Baldwin . . . I don't know how to perfectly describe them. They are brilliant. The way they interact with each other, how they detest each other, how they trust and distrust each other; complexity lies in their chemistry. The plot may be simple, but it's the characters that makes Glengarry Glen Ross really special. It's a movie that must be remembered for every new generation.

Word of caution: if you can't stand heavy profanity, then you probably won't feel very comfortable while watching this. The F and S words are constantly used throughout, so you have been warned.

Movie Review: Excellent
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like movies that are pure interesting dialogue and character development (12 Angry Men, Inherit the Wind, The Big Kahuna) this is the movie for you. My friend and I had one of those discussions the other day, "if you were stranded on an island and only had one movie to watch for the rest of your life, what would it be?" and I answered Glengarry Glen Ross. Highly recommend.

Movie Review: Almost like watching it on Broadway
Summary: 5 Stars

Perhaps that's wishful thinking, as I never got the chance to see GGR on stage. But watching it here makes you realize it could be very satisfying in a small theater. After all, there are relatively few sets (most indoors) and essentially no special effects. Isn't it nice to watch a great movie without CGI? That's how all the movies were in my day, sonny!

As for the product itself (10 Year Anniversary Special Edition from 2002), I'm not sure why a studio would release a two-disc set with one disc being widescreen and the other being full screen, but at least it's not a flipper disc! In any case, there's plenty of extras, including some Director's commentary (I believe scene specific, not running the length of the film).

Certainly we see echos of Death of a Salesman, especially in Jack Lemmon's character. Overall a magnificant ensemble case. I have heard that the actors would come to the set even when they didn't have a scene, just to watch the other guys work.

PUT THAT COFFEE DOWN!

Movie Review: Glengarry GlenRoss
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a great movie for anyone interested in finding out about old school sales techniques and old school call centers. It can teach you about sales.

Movie Review: Nice acting
Summary: 4 Stars

I wouldn't rate this a must see, but if you're a sucker for good acting, this is a great movie to watch. It epitomizes various employee attitudes(from around the world I would say) ranging from lazy detachment to desperation. If you're an employee, it is very likely that you see yourself in one of the characters and makes you think about whether it's something you like. In any case, the twists and turns of the movie make for great entertainment value for a weekend with a bowl of popcorn on your lap.

Summary of Glengarry Glen Ross [VHS]

Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of playwright-screenwriter David Mamet, who updated his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for this all-star screen adaptation. The material is not inherently cinematic, so the movie's greatest asset is Mamet's peerless dialogue and the assembly of a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin (the last in a role Mamet created especially for the film). Often regarded as a critique of the Reagan administration's impact on the American economy, the play and film focus on a competitive group of real estate salesmen who've gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When an executive "motivator" (Alec Baldwin) demands a sales contest among the agents in the cramped office, the stakes are critically high: any agent who fails to meet his quota of sales "leads" (i.e., potential buyers) will lose his job. This intense ultimatum is a boon for the office superstar (Pacino), but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) now finds himself clinging nervously to faded glory. Political and personal rivalries erupt under pressure when the other agents (Alan Arkin, Ed Harris) suspect the office manager (Kevin Spacey) of foul play. This cauldron of anxiety, tension, and sheer desperation provides fertile soil for Mamet's scathingly rich dialogue, which is like rocket fuel for some of the greatest actors of our time. Pacino won an Oscar nomination for his volatile performance, but it's Lemmon who's the standout, doing some of the best work of his distinguished career. Director James Foley shapes Mamet's play into a stylish, intensely focused film that will stand for decades as a testament to its brilliant writer and cast. --Jeff Shannon
