VHS Movie Reviews of Getaway [VHS]Movie Review: THE GETAWAY Summary: 5 StarsOne of Steve McQueen's better films. This is a lot better than the recent remake. Lot of action and fun to watch. A real keepsake for collectors. It's still available on AMAZON even if it's not in stores anymore.
Movie Review: SHEER DELIGHT!!! Summary: 5 StarsSteve McQueen and Sam Pekinpah at the top of their game in this unusual and creative genre film. The 1080 transfer is sparkling! I've always loved this film but seeing it this way is like seeing it for the first time, only better!! The other positive reviews pretty much nail it. In this DVD you get marvelous extras including the original score from Jerry Fielding which was rejected by McQueen at the last minute! I was shocked to hear this. The score from Quincy Jones is one of my favorite things about the film. I am a big Fielding fan and I'm happy to see it get released here! You won't be disappointed with this disc!!!! *****
Movie Review: McQueen & Peckingpah create chaos and a crime classic Summary: 4 StarsAfter the failure of "Junior Bonner", a good film by the way, Steve McQueen wanted to reunite with director Sam Peckingpah with an action movie--McQueen's forte. And did they suceed in spades!! Based on a book by noir novelist Jim Thompson, "The Getaway" is an action packed crime thriller full of double crosses and shoot outs that will take your breath away. And McQueen and future wife Ali McGraw create combustion every time they're in a scene. In fact any film that makes Ali McGraw, who is usually pretty wooden, look good must have something going for it--and in this case, it's McQueen. She would later re-unite with Peckingpah for a lesser film, "Convoy" with Kris Kristopherson and Ernest Borgnine but this one is her best effort yet. Also it looks great in Hi-Def and in this case, the HD DVD version which I bought for over $5 is a bargain compared to the Blu-ray version. If you like action crime dramas, you can't go wrong with this one, perhaps McQueen's best, even better than "Bullit".
Movie Review: The Getaway Summary: 5 StarsAlways enjoy any movie with Steve McQueen in it - a classic and even better in blu-ray.
Movie Review: Thhe Getaway blu-ray Summary: 4 StarsDisc came on time, however flimsy packaging seller used caused the disc to come off it's hub during the transit and bounce around inside the case.
Perhaps a better packaging on future sold items would be a good idea.
Summary of Getaway [VHS]It's better than the 1994 remake starring Kim Basinger and husband Alec Baldwin, but this 1972 thriller relies too heavily on the low-key star power of Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, and the stylish violence of director Sam Peckinpah, reduced here to a mechanical echo of his former glory. McQueen plays a bank robber whose wife (MacGraw) makes a deal with a Texas politician to have her husband released from prison in return for a percentage from their next big heist. But when the plan goes sour, the couple must flee to Mexico as fast as they can, with a variety of gun-wielding thugs on their trail. MacGraw was duly skewered at the time for her dubious acting ability, but the film still has a raw, unglamorous quality that lends a timeless spin to the familiar crooks-on-the-lam scenario. As always, Peckinpah rises to the occasion with some audacious scenes of action and suspense, including a memorable chase on a train that still grabs the viewer's attention. Not a great film, but a must for McQueen and Peckinpah fans. --Jeff Shannon It's better than the 1994 remake starring Kim Basinger and husband Alec Baldwin, but this 1972 thriller relies too heavily on the low-key star power of Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, and the stylish violence of director Sam Peckinpah, reduced here to a mechanical echo of his former glory.
