VHS Movie Reviews of Fandango (1985) [VHS]Movie Review: Coming of age Summary: 5 StarsOne of Kevin Costner's early movies and one of his best. Rates high on my top twenty-five list. A coming of age movie for "The Groovers," five graduating college roommates in the early 70's at the height of the Vietnam draft. Great music, particularly that of Pat Matheny. Very funny with a touch of seriousness.
Movie Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 StarsFandango remains a largely unknown and underappreciated gem of a movie. The characters, music, scenery, locations, and plot are absolutely spectacular.
In a nutshell, Fandango is story of friendship, camaraderie, loyalty, lost love, overcoming fears, taking responsibility, growing up, and saying goodbye.
I never get tired of seeing this movie, it contains life lessons applicable to all of us. Buy the DVD and share it with others - they will thank you for it.
Also, sometime in your life I highly recommend you take a road trip through West Texas (Midland/Odessa, Monahans, Pyote, Marfa, Alpine, Marathon, San Elizario, El Paso, and Big Bend National Park) - you'll be glad you did.
Movie Review: Where are the extra features? Summary: 4 StarsThis is one of my favorite movies of all time and in my opinion, one of Kevin Costner's best performances! The funny thing is, the role of Gardner Barnes is what I imagine Kevin Costner to be more like in real life; yet Kevin hardly seems to ever acknowledge this film at all! There's a website out there ([...]) just for this movie and it's fans, and nothing from Kevin on it. But thank God for Chuck Bush for keeping this going. Even on the James Lipton show "Inside the Actors Studio" on Bravo featuring Kevin Costner, there was absolutely no mention of Fandango. And, whether Kevin cares or not, this makes me think less of him.
As for the movie itself, if you're a guy, this one should rank up there with Animal House and Caddyshack in my estimation. It's hilarious to see Judd Nelson in this contrasting role when compared to his role in the Breakfast Club. And the role of Truman Sparks is very charismatic and memorable. It really takes a brilliant actor to play such a serendipitous character the way Marvin J. McIntyre does.
As for the ladies, even if you don't like Animal House and the like, there is an amazing dance sequence in the reception scene near the end of the movie along with some of the best soundtrack music ever in a movie - which brings me to another point, where is the official soundtrack to this movie? It is criminal that no one from this movie has done this for Christ's sake! Yes, I said it, Jesus himself would love this movie and the music in it!
Bottom line, for the money, and even if this dvd were expensive, Fandango is an absolute paragon and is a must-have for any genuine movie collector - and should be a must-have for any thespian aficionado too! The only drawback is the lack of extra features etc. Perhaps Mr. Costner will come to his senses and take the initiative himself in a re-release of this epic with all the attention and extras it deserves!
Movie Review: Best "coming of age" movie ever! Summary: 5 StarsThis is a great movie about five guys moving into the next phase of their lives in a very termultious time. You can actually see the actors grow from boys to men from the start to the end of the movie. Plus it is VERY funny. Some of the humor you will only get if you are from Texas and sometimes it takes a few watches to get the humor.
Movie Review: One Magic Moment Summary: 5 StarsMy personal highlight from this magical little film: The dance sequence set to Pat Metheny's "It's For You".
Summary of Fandango (1985) [VHS]An unknown Kevin Costner is magnetic in this entertaining road picture that bypassed most theaters when it was released in 1985. On the eve of their college graduation in 1972, five students go off for one last road trip together to righteously celebrate the privilege of youth. Kevin Reynolds expanded his grad-school film to make this one, which he also directed, and it caught the eye of Steven Spielberg, who made Fandango one of his first projects at the newly formed Amblin. Costner's charisma is undeniable in his first lead performance as Gardner Barnes, the free bird of the group. Barnes applauds buddy Kenneth's (Sam Robards) decision to cancel his wedding and now is talking him into dodging the draft. But lost love drives Gardner, too, and we see dreams of an abandoned beauty (Suzy Amis). Others in the car include stick-in-the-mud Judd Nelson (in his best performance), who is gung ho for fulfilling his duty in Vietnam, and the soft giant Dorman (Chuck Bush). Reynolds's aggressive camera style and great use of music (Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)" and Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home" bookend the picture) make this film zing along. Reynolds and Costner went on to film (and fight off-screen) two more pictures, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld, but they were never better together than in this first film. Being hungry Hollywood unknowns does have certain advantages. --Doug Thomas
