We inhabit a planet that is ruled by the laws of physics, and as we learn in Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Video Natural Disasters, natural disasters are only natural processes pushed to the limits of science. Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, tsunamis, and volcanoes are forces to be reckoned with, and those who survive are often left powerless and stunned in their aftermath. If you think that natural disasters are not your concern, think again; you do not need to live along the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire" to be in harm's way, chances are you live in an area that is potentially threatened by one of these occurrences. This exciting and informative video takes you inside each disaster, so the viewer has a full scientific understanding of how each storm is born, what the physical impact can be and the possible benefits of a natural disaster such as increased rainfall or re-enriched topsoil. In a tight half-hour, Natural Disasters explores the origins and effects of every act of God imaginable, from volcanoes to tornadoes to asteroid impacts. Classic DK visuals reinforce each idea: a cute, seismograph-watching bunny illustrates a discussion on whether animals can predict disasters, while blue army men (a cold front) face off against red army men (a warm front) to show how hurricanes are born. At times, Eyewitness: Natural Disasters may overstate (avalanches are breathlessly called "the white death") and oversimplify (lava doesn't exactly shoot out of the Earth's core), but it succeeds in creating excitement and inspiring interest in some pretty fascinating phenomenon. --Paul Hughes
