VHS Movie Reviews of Doctor Who - The Claws of Axos [VHS]

Movie Review: The Master and the Doctor Team up!
Summary: 4 Stars

Very interesting match up , The Master brought the Axons to Earth for his costume plans of invasion and power, but when he is double-cross by the Axons he team up with The Doctor and togheter beat the Axons for good!
If you like Jon Pertwee Doctor, you will enjoy this adventure!

Movie Review: Best Pertwee Episode!
Summary: 5 Stars

If I could sum up the entire Pertwee era in one story, then this would have to be it. It's got everything. You've got a strong political story, UNIT, the Master, alien invasion, one of the neatests monsters in "Doctor Who" history who can make duplicates and seem like very beautiful and friendly creatures at one moment and be grotesque frightening murderous ones the next, you've got the Doctor trying to escape his exile on Earth, the Doctor uses his TARDIS in this one, and you've got a lot of mystery and action in this one as well. And unlike many Pertwee ones, it's not long and drawn out. They got so many different plots all going on at once, and it's all within four little parts. I'm actually surprised what they were able to fit into this story into just four parts, which I suppose is what made it so damn good. The acting and directing is great, and so is the special effects. The Axon spaceship is possibly the most alien-looking I have ever seen. It's a living organic spaceship, and it is quite possible the creepiest spaceship ever featured in the show. This story is no doubt one of my all-time favorites. Highly recommended!

Movie Review: Great old Doctor Who episode
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great old Doctor Who episode that isn't available on DVD at the time of this post. This is a must see episode to understand this doctor.

Movie Review: Good extras
Summary: 3 Stars

The episode, Claws of Axos, hasn't aged well I think. In the voice over commentary the actors think the psychadelic overlays and so on have held up well. The story was a bit different than usual and the Master is present but plays no real role here. His scenes with the Doctor are brilliant as always, UNIT has some good stuff and the Making Of and Restoration extras were interesting but the monsters were not terribly strong until the end. The massacre in the lab chamber was excellent! I recommend it as a fan of the Master, and for the in depth look into what it was like to film Doctor Who in the old days.

Movie Review: My first Dr. Who experience. "The Claws Of Axos"
Summary: 4 Stars

I was 7 years old when I caught the final episode of "Axos". As a kid I loved monster movies and anything related to. I was introduced to this marvelous british import that aired on public television at 10:00pm. Unfortunately, I never got see any more as my mom had banned me from watching monster movies and tv for awhile. {they were giving me nightmares despite the fact that I loved them) I eventually got back to watching Dr.Who during the Tom Baker era, but that's another story. It was great to watch this serial in it's entirety, I would rank it as a classic. A blened of all the things that made this series great, well paced storytelling, Solid acting, and most of all spaghetti monsters! I've always heard Sci-Fi critics downplayed the show for the limited sfx, but I always felt they added to the shows novelty. I love the news series, but don't call yourself a who fan until you've gotten a taste of the classic series. One of the best of The Pertwee era, "The Claws Of Axos" will always be near and dear to my heart.

Summary of Doctor Who - The Claws of Axos [VHS]

It's another job for UNIT, the Doctor and Jo when Axons bearing gifts land in a remote corner of England.
A podlike spacecraft is on an intercept course for Earth, and nervous humans' first instinct is to shoot first and ask questions later. Instead, they discover a race of golden, beautiful aliens asking for help and offering an unlimited source of energy--with a catch. Originally this 1971 adventure was to be called "The Vampire from Space," but that was too obvious, particularly when the villainous Master (Roger Delgado) is really behind this latest threat to Earth. Can the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) discover the awful truth about Axos in time, or will his desire to free himself from the planet overcome his better judgment?

A fabulous sense of Englishness permeates this era of the series, with pretentious bureaucrats, overzealous army officers, and comic poachers among others reacting to aliens in their own backyard. And despite being the Doctor's main adversary at the time, the Master gets all the best lines, including his comment about the repairs to the TARDIS being a "botch up," and suggesting to the nervous Englishmen that "putting sticky tape on the windows" might be a good defense against a nuclear explosion. Watch for an early appearance by Tim Piggot-Smith (The Jewel in the Crown) as an army officer, as well as a sudden snowstorm during filming that is explained away as "freak weather conditions" caused by the aliens! Episodes 2 and 3 appear a bit murky due to the original British copies having to be remastered. With lots of monsters, action, and high-tech sets, stories like this were the backbone that Doctor Who's reputation in the 1970s rests on. --Ryan K. Johnson
