Summary of Discovering Everyday Spirituality - Place [VHS]

Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul, hosts an examination of the concept of place and spirituality in this installment of the Discovering Everyday Spirituality set from PBS. The framework and general direction of the presentation is provided by Moore, but a number of people appear in interviews to discuss specific places, some of them as mundane as a reclining chair, where they get in touch with their spiritual side. Though many would connote spiritual places with the splendors of the wilderness, one woman provides a practical guide to discovering the spirituality one can encounter simply by strolling close to home, remarking happily that "there is myth in just a walk around the block." Other segments talk about the role of mountains and rivers, and how individuals and society itself can better relate to nature. Some of the material covered in this video, such as a segment in which a woman who gives workshops on "family spirituality" talks about the "powerful places" in a family's house, may be hard to fathom, but for the most part the material relies on common sense, and the presentation does provide food for thought. --Robert J.
