The Creatures Fantastic series is a unique way to journey into the world of myth and legend. If you are interested in why seafarers thought they saw mermaids, this video even has a real mermaid they found swimming in the ocean. (I'm joking, but it is well acted) The tales of these seductive sirens calling to sailors is intriguing.

Zoe Wanamaker narrates and sheds new light on the story of Jonah and reveals why fish were worshipped in times past. A main theme is how the sea is a tomb and a womb. While amusing, the shark god/surfboard scenes seemed out of place. Someone has a real sense of humor.

If you want more information on the Syrian Mood Goddess or why Christians used the symbol of a fish when persecuted, you will find this a creative way to gain insight into various ideas.

I loved the section when they mentioned that if you gaze into the mirror of a mermaid, you will behold your true self. Sometimes I think we are all mirrors to one another to bring out our true selves.

Summary of Creatures Fantastic:Creatures of Deep [VHS]

Another fantasmic installment from the Doring Kindersley Creatures Fantastic series. Narrated by smoky-voiced Zo? Wanamaker, this elegantly made video strings together a series of vignettes that illustrate and try to explain derivations of various myths and legends of the sea. Starting with the Biblical story of Jonah and the Whale, the video examines possible scientific explanations of everything from legends of Poseidon, Odyseus and the Sirens, mermaids, and the sea itself as a symbol for "tomb and womb." Using borderline campy dramatizations, Creatures of the Deep delves into the sea as metaphor for birth (baptism rituals), knowledge (dolphins guiding ships), and tomb (literal death by drowning). Certainly the sea and its rarely seen creatures continues to mystify us because it is so vast and dark. What is unknown is frightening, which is why we create creatures and myths to explain its workings. Even male sexuality is touched upon--certainly the mermaid tale is one created by men who'd been at sea without much human contact. The sea creates the illusion of beautiful unattainable objects that beckon men and call to them as both a fantasy and an embodiment of man's ambivalence toward female sexuality and human contact with the opposite sex. This particular topic wasn't discussed enough--as in Werewolves, the filmmakers only touched lightly on the individual myths and legends of the subject at hand, combining into more of a composite of sea tales than an in-depth discussion of each topic. In addition to the dramatizations, footage of octopuses, whales, dolphins, and other sea creatures provides colorful and entertaining visuals. Recommended to ages over 10 due to more sophisticated analyses of individual myths and legends. --Gilia Angell
