VHS Movie Reviews of Carrie [VHS]Movie Review: Carrie (Special Edition) Summary: 5 StarsCarrie White is the outsider of her class. She's a mousy girl, all of her classmates hate her, and her mother is a religious fanatic who walks around in a black cape. After she unexpectedly has her first period, she is teased by the girls more ruthlessly than before. The gym teacher punishes the girls that were involved and one of them, Sue Snell, feels sorry for what she did and asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom instead of her. But another girl that has been banned from the prom, Chris Hargenson, isn't so forgiving and hatches an evil plan with her boyfriend that involves Carrie and a bucket full of pig's blood. But what none of the students realize is that Carrie has the power of telekinesis, the power to move things with your mind, and that when you make her mad, she transforms from an innocent girl to a rage-filled monster. And this is gonna be a prom no one will ever forget. You want to call this horror movie or thriller or whatever else is up to you, Carrie's scope can't reach beyond just one genre. It is a thriller, but at the same time a very humane movie. This movie wasn't made for cheap scares: every scene is brilliantly captured. The scary parts may be rare but when they are there you just can't move from your seat. If you are looking for a terrifying but also moving movie, Carrie is just right for you.
Movie Review: Great Movie but Lousy Blu-ray Transfer Summary: 3 StarsIf you enjoy this film as much as I do, I have bad news: The Blu-ray transfer is mediocre at best. Scenes are soft and often grainy, lacking any of the real clarity high def can bring. Sound also doesn't really benefit; it's slightly sharper but that's about it. Unless you don't already own the film, stick with the regular DVD. The upgrade, even at such a low price, isn't really worth it.
Movie Review: Blood washes blood Summary: 5 StarsBrian dePalma brings Stephen King's brilliant first novel to life in all its stark and bloody detail. Carrie is the story of a birth in all its gorey glory. Carrie; shy, embarrassed, seemingly helpless, attempts to emerge from the hell of her childhood into a free, bright adulthood, only to be met with the same ridicule and violence from her cruel classmates and fanatical mother. But Carrie has grown up, not into an adult, but into something darker, more vengeful and infinitely more powerful that will repay them blood for blood. Sissy Spacek is perfect as the deer-in-headlights performance she gives as Carrie White, creating a character that is simultaneously horrifying and pitiable.
Movie Review: Love this movie! Summary: 5 StarsI really like this movie. I am a huge Stephen King fan and collect his movies and books. The plot is changed in a few ways from the book but not so much that you can't enjoy watching the movie.
Movie Review: Tony Manero realizes spilling gravy on his shirt isn't his worst fear Summary: 4 StarsHere we are with Octoberfest horror film review number 11. As we've been consistently trying to switch it up between great horror, average horror, awful b, slashers, creatures, and classics we landed on Carrie which is well loved in the horror community. Surprisingly the old boy Sid and his many years of watching flicks has never seen Carrie. Really no reason behind it, guess it's just one of those that never made it on the priority list despite it's popularity. When it appeared on a movie channel the other night we figured we are due for a classic and might as well give Carrie a run.
Carrie had a star studded cast lead by Mr. Saturday Night Fever himself John Travolta, Sissy Spacek, and P.J Soles (the "see anything you like?" chick from Halloween)who was just as annoying/hot in this one too. Since it's so popular here goes the standard brief Sid description; Carry White is the shy quiet girl in high school that nobody talks to. After getting her um..time of the month issue in the shower at school she's teased non-stop by the usual high school goons and hot chicks. The kids wind up getting in trouble and decide to take things out on Carrie when she goes to the Prom with jock Tommy Ross. Only problem is Carrie is a real mixer, a king mixer! She winds up getting some hardcore revenge with her telepathic powers.
For Sid Carrie was a really solid flick, but not one that would offer anything more then the one time watch. Yes it was good, and yes it's a classic, but it just wasn't something we could do again and again like Halloween. It was nice to finally get it under our belt though since it comes with the utmost regard. Plus it's always nice to mix the horror genre up with all different decades and the 70's is one of the best. It does have that great gritty 70's feel that's a Sid favorite. Certainly one we would recommend to check out if you haven't already and probably one we would've liked back in the glory days. We sure Santa probably loves it.
Summary of Carrie [VHS]Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel, Carrie "catches the mind, shakes it and refuses to let it go" (Time)! Starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (in Oscar(r)-nominated* performances), John Travolta and Amy Irving, this ultimate revenge fantasy is "absolutely spellbinding" (Roger Ebert), "outrageously witty" (Los Angeles Times) and one of the all-time great horror classics! At the center of the terror is Carrie (Spacek), a tortured high-school misfit with no confidence, no friends...and no idea about the extent of her secret powers of telekinesis. But when her psychotic mother and sadistic classmates finally go too far, the once-shy teen becomes an unrestrained, vengeance-seeking powerhouse who, with the help of her 'special gift,' causes all hell to break loose in a famed cinematic frenzy of blood, fire and brimstone! *1976: Spacek, Actress; Laurie, Supporting Actress This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time. --Tom Keogh
