VHS Movie Reviews of Bliss (1997) [VHS]

Movie Review: Phenominal Movie About The Sexual Objectification Of Women
Summary: 5 Stars

"Bliss" is the first and the ONLY movie I have ever seen which deals so honestly and so explicitly with the way male objectivication of women as sexual objects just completely and totally, shall we say, spoils all the fun for both sexes. This is the story, or case, if you will, of a young woman who has been completely and systematically abused by her father and then manages to find a husband (what a surprise)who also sees her as really just a sex object. Both men profess love for her, but each man just really uses her for sexual gratification. This film pulls none of its punches in dealing with this difficult subject and manages to integrate many, many ideas (from different psychosexual, spiritual and religious belief systems)into a wonderful philosophical and therapeutic whole...that works! At least it works in the context of the film's story told through these fictional characters. The genius of this film is that it both tells you (gives the viewer enough verbal explanation of theory and belief systems) and SHOWS how and why these people behave as they do in a very organic, plot-driven way.

"Bliss" is not for everyone. It's not for those not sophicated enough to understand it's content, nor for those just looking for some kind of cheap thrill. You will love "Bliss" if you love TRULY (not those hollow, exploitative XXX pieces of crap)adult movies about "real" people, real pain and real sexual/imtimacy issues. It is a movie about the healing power of love. Can you handle that?

Movie Review: A highly under rated , brave and intelligent film about the nature of love,
Summary: 5 Stars

Bliss is a powerful and absorbing movie which explore the nature of adult sexuality and love. The plot revolves around the relationship of a newly married yuppie couple,Steve and Maria. We quickly discover that Maria is a compulsive neurotic bordering on the psychotic who is already in therapy and who soon reveals herself to be incapable of having an orgasm. Although an acutely sensitive person she is essentially very loving and copes by faking it. This leads her and eventually her husband to meet with Baltazzar, a sex therapist played with a beguiling calm charisma by Terence Stamp.
They thus begin a difficult journey leading to some very important discoveries about themselves. On this journey the Director, Lance Young, engages strongly with such themes as the very nature of sex and love and our capacity to fully give.Steve is a reasonably sensitive man, but like most men has to deal with a strong sexual libido and a dominant male culture which encourages us to put its satisfaction first. His journey is therefore towards increasing awareness and selflessness which ultimately brings its own rewards as he begins to understand the nature of real love and to be able to give and receive it.
The sex we see is never gratuitous and has an emotional reality which is rooted in the context of this developing relationship. It is light years away from porn and the simplistic banality of much Hollywood sexual depiction. I suspect many men will be challenged by it in the same way Steve was by the situation he found himself faced with, but it is a journey worth taking.Craig Sheffer and Sheryl Lee give performances as the young couple which ultimately draw us into the movie, but it is Stamp who holds the film together supported by an engaging and often beautiful sound track that heightens its mood.
There is a nice twist at the end when Baltazzar embarks on his own new relationship and Steve wryly reflects on the difference between giving advice and putting it into practice with someone you love and whose personality you therefore accept as part of the deal.A film for adults with open hearts and minds. Highly recommend

Movie Review: Thoughtful and Edifying
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie on cable this morning after a difficult Skype evening with my first and one true love and with whom I've reconnected after 44 years. I feel like I held my breath throughout the entire movie; it was so intriguing and so edifying. While my lover and I had no sexual shortcomings at 21, we both knew there was something haunting me that baffled both of us and ultimately separated us until now.
During my 10 year psychotherapy period, the issue of incest perpetrated on me as a child by my older male and female cousins never came up. I felt "cured". I didn't remember until my male cousin told me, not too long ago.
I've had 4 failed marriages and felt my one last chance for true happiness might go the same way but this enlightening film gives me hope and courage. My lover's and my intense love for each other has never waned--throughout all these years. We are literally like "a hand in a glove." Now,it's just a matter of facing what must be faced and letting our love and devotion carry us through.
This movie thoughtfully and intellectually instructs on how to delve into those very broken places that we all must have hidden away. Without this movie, I would have never understood and couldn't have hoped to heal those places that I didn't know were broken.

Movie Review: Blissful
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie ten years ago and was incredibly moved by it. I had just ended a long term relationship with my fiance and it revealed the root cause of our disconnect: I sought Bliss and he was unduly influenced by our western notions of sexuality i.e. male female dynamics must have a winner and a loser: a zero sum game. It blew me away and reshaped my entire relationship with sexuality.

I happened on it by chance then and I happened on it by chance again this week. Or was it chance? I believe I met the man I will marry three weeks ago. His desire for Bliss is soul stirring and inspiring.

It is still remarkable. The issue of sexual abuse is included because it shows what happens when we devalue the sacred nature of sexuality and male-female power dynamics for our own gain rather than as a mutually healing experience that unites us with the Divine. It destroys worlds.

But Bliss as revealed by Balthazar, is the creative spark of God.

Movie Review: This movie will transform you
Summary: 5 Stars

I find it sad that in our age of pornography, movies such as these are harder to find than a needle in haystack. Deftly construed, this movie engages you at levels that are so deep, you will uncover things about yourself that you didn't even know or were afraid to know. I will treasure this movie like the rare gem it is.

Summary of Bliss (1997) [VHS]

It may not be a great movie, but Bliss could be one of the greatest marriage-boosters ever filmed. This curious drama fits into the too-familiar form of the "therapy movie," but it's acted with intensity by a committed (and rather brave) trio. Craig Sheffer plays an uptight Seattle husband who discovers his neurotic wife (Sheryl Lee) visiting a radical doctor (Terence Stamp) who has sex--therapeutically--with his patients. After briefly flipping out, Sheffer finds himself buying into the doctor's remedies for a sexual and emotional make-over. The silky-smooth Stamp is perfectly cast: with his enthusiasm for chakras and fine cigars, the doctor is both spiritual guru and the kind of man who reads Playboy. The film veers into ridiculousness at times, yet there is something intriguing about its how-to frankness. Home viewers may find themselves embarrassed and maybe just a little bit liberated. --Robert Horton
