Summary of Biography - Richard Widmark: Strength of Characters [VHS]

Only a few years later, however, he was tired of playing bad guys (in such noir classics as Road House, Night and the City, and Pickup on South Street). He decided to make a change, and it paid off. He was particularly fond of Westerns and adventures and made several over the next few decades. He realized one of his greatest ambitions by working with Spencer Tracey (Broken Lance). In turn, he befriended and helped to influence actors such as Sidney Poitier and Robert Wagner, who offer him the highest of praise. Widmark's own comments about the peaks and valleys of his long career are both humorous and self-effacing.

If his life was free of scandal and innuendo--a remarkable achievement for an actor coming up in the '40s and '50s--it was not without its share of tragedies: most notably, the losses of his wife and brother. His sensitivity and decency provide the heart of this profile, whereas his love for and dedication to his craft should continue to entertain audiences and inspire serious actors for years to come. --Kathleen C.
