VHS Movie Reviews of Barbara Cartland's Duel of HeartsMovie Review: enjoyable Cartland telemovie Summary: 4 StarsFilmed for British cable in the early 90's, this was one in a series of four movies based on the romantic period novels of Dame Barbara Cartland. DUEL OF HEARTS is the story of Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody), who literally stumbles across the path of handsome Lord Vane Brecon (Benedict Taylor). Vane, who has been wrongfully accused of murder, hides a shameful family secret. Caroline, under the alias of Miss Fry, decides to enter the employ of his household in order to help him. A fascinating tale, filled with Cartland's always-enjoyable and potent mix of romance and heart-pounding adventure. The cast also includes Michael York, Geraldine Chaplin, Virginia McKenna, Billie Whitelaw, Beryl Reid, Adalberto Maria Merli, Suzanna Hamilton and Margaret Mazzantini.
Movie Review: Male critics are for the birds. Summary: 5 StarsI will never know why they choose a male critic to review the historical romance movies that we women love. Over 50% of books sold are romance, and still they don't get it, I have watched the TNT movies several times, and wish that they would make some new ones, they take us away from everyday life where we can fanasize about a handsome hero & heroine who are not involved in car chases and beating each other up every 5 mins. Time to get Marcus Gilbert from Hazard of Hearts & A Ghost in Monte Carlo, back to work.
Movie Review: A fun flick Summary: 4 StarsThis is an entertaining movie for the hopeless romantic. It's too bad that it's not on DVD yet.
Movie Review: After all this time I still remember ... Summary: 5 Stars... the other day I was in a second hand bookstore when I noticed a large pile of Barbara Cartland copies ... And right away I went looking for "Duel of hearts" .. I've seen this movie when it was new and Benedict Taylor made such an impression on me I could still remember how the story went.. I bought the copy & read it in 1-2-3 ... It's hard to believe that hardly anything is available on the net concerning Benedict and that this movie isn't available on DVD yet ... but for the first time in years I feel like a giggling teenager again, wishing I was Caroline ;-)
Movie Review: Reminicent of Jane Eyre Summary: 4 StarsObviously, this movie borrows from Jane Eyre, but is still an enjoyable bodice-ripper. Benedict Taylor as Lord Vane Brecon is extremely handsome. Wonder what happened to him? Alison Doody makes a plucky heroine. I miss these early 90's TNT movies! Particularly great on a rainy day.
Summary of Barbara Cartland's Duel of HeartsA rather jarring mix of period drama, trashy romance, and all-star blockbuster, Duel of Hearts is a swashbuckling, bodice-ripping tale of slightly dubious quality. Based on a novel by Barbara Cartland, it provides the usual dollops of intrigue and love, although its choice of a female protagonist does at least give it some twist. The splendidly named Lady Caroline Faye (Alison Doody) is the story's plucky heroine, fighting to prove the innocence of her beau Lord Vane Brecon and discover his troubling inner turmoil. Donning a disguise that seems to consist largely of wearing her hair in a different manner, she places herself amongst the very people that would seek Brecon's undoing. Those looking for high-quality drama should probably go elsewhere, but this is an entertaining enough piece of silliness, combining the history of Regency England with the production values of a daytime soap opera. --Phil Udell
