VHS Movie Reviews of Babes In Toyland (1986)

Movie Review: Love this movie...
Summary: 4 Stars

I remembered watching this movie when i was younger, decided to buy for my daughter to watch. She enjoyed it as much as i did.

Movie Review: Easily a Holiday Classic!
Summary: 5 Stars

After stumbling over this movie on ABC Family, I absolutely had to have it. After checking Amazon for months, this is the first time I have been able to find it! I am a huge fan of Keanu Reeves, so this movie was an absolute delight (even to someone born in 1987).

The premise of the story begins after Lisa Piper (Drew Barrymore), a child who appears to have already "grown up," is thrown out of a car. Her world quickly becomes Toyland which is a combination of "The Wizard of Oz," and a "Mother Goose" world. Mary Contrary (Jill Schoelen) and Jack Nimble (Keanu Reeves) are in love with each other; however, the antagonist of the story, Barnaby Barnacle (Richard Mulligan), is forcing Mary to wed him. Naturally, Mary and Jack are unwilling to succumb to living without each other and as a result, Lisa becomes involved. Soon enough, a battle over Toyland begins with the evil Barnaby Barnacle leading the way. Ultimately, Lisa and her new friends attempt to enlist the help of the Toymaster (Pat Morita) who can only help if Lisa believes in toys. Thus, the story brings on a reminiscent moment of childhood that so many crave. Even as the battle for Toyland develops, one begins to wonder if Lisa will ever make it back home to her family and friends.

While this movie is perfect for any child to watch during Christmas, adults can appreciate the effortlessly created storyline that engulfs everyone. I most definitely recommend this to Keanu Reeves, or Drew Barrymore, fans! I saw this movie at an early age and to see it available is stupendous! The magnificent child-like creations in this story are endearing and promise to bring about holiday spirit. This movie is definitely one to reminisce over for years to come and is easily a classic among so many holiday movies!

Movie Review: Edited =(
Summary: 3 Stars

I loved this film as a child, treasuring the "taped from the TV" version well into my twenties. When I finally purchased the video, I was disappointed to realize that the VHS is edited, eliminating some transitional dialogue and two songs ("jail break" and the one where Jack and Mary are singing in jail). It is still a charming story that will be passed along for generations to come, but I will be sure to hold on to the "tv version" that has every aspect of the film. It would be terrific if ORION released a DVD version of this film with all of the uncut scenes in it!

Movie Review: 6th Grade Holiday Treat
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this The day of when we got out for Christmas break. I loved it.They edited the song about the breakout,on ABC Family .when I see Lisa,The Toymaker and Georgie Pogie tied to those chairs,I have an urge to change into a superheroine with my partner in crimefighting,3 sidekicks and 2 assistants and saying"Heel,Heel" to those things. snap our fingers and viola, they are free.I would love to have the DVD.

Movie Review: Babes in Toyland Ate My Soul
Summary: 1 Stars

Assuming this craptacular film didn't eat my soul, I would gladly sell it to whatever evil deity could make me forget the twelve hours (running time will vary in direct correlation with your I.Q.) I wasted watching this nonsensical romp through my worst nightmare.

First off, let me dispel the rumor that this is a "children's film" so being an adult I shouldn't like it. Even children will balk the first time they see Toyland and all of the mystical creatures that are comprised of discarded amusement park costumes. The most na?ve babe (pardon the pun) will groan at the forced delivery of Richard Mulligan (he delivers five minutes of exposition to the floor), the drunken slurred delivery of Drew Barrymore (listen every time she tries to pronounce anything with an S), the mindless delivery of Keanu Reeves (yes, this makes his work in Point Break seem Oscar worthy) and the nonsensical delivery of Pat (Mr. Myogi) Morita.

The songs are insipid (O-E-I-O, spells Ohio???) from the homage to Cincinnati to the...sorry, I drove a butter knife into my ear drum after that song.

The direction is nonexistent (the foil breaks into a cookie factory and ends up stealing cakes????).

I firmly believe this movie is responsible for the death of Richard Mulligan. This film should be indicted, not brought home for the Holidays...unless you hate your children.

Spend your money on the Burl Ives claymation specials from the 60's. Even those of you with a nostalgic remembrance of this film (like my wife) will up and leave the room, saddened by the fact that this was considered entertainment in 1986.

Summary of Babes In Toyland (1986)

[VHS] Babes In Toyland. Once a bright and cheerful community, Toyland is in great danger from the terible Barnaby (Mulligan) and his scary creatures who live in the forest of the night. They are trying to turn Toyland into a world without toys. The only person who can save Toyland is Lisa (Barrymore), a little girl from Cincinnati who lands in Toyland on Christmas Eve. But since Lisa, a very grown-up little girl, doesnt believe in toys, she needs special help from the wise but impish Toymaster (Morita), the dashing and gallant Jack Nimble (Reeves) and the mother-of-many-children Mrs Hubard (Brennan). Together they muster an army of toy soldiers and teddy bears to drive the villianious Barnaby and his nightmare creatures out of Toyland.
