VHS Movie Reviews of Avalon (2001) (Sub)Movie Review: Surpressed by Weinstein [MIRAMAX] - ORIGNIAL MATRIX Summary: 5 StarsOkay I can;t find the reference but I heard of Avalon via the web - I didn't read the cheats or reviews. I bought direct from Japan [VHS] and then read online amateur reviews.
MIRAMAX was supposed to release it.
They re-engineered it.
This is not hustle and bustle super slick action.
It'ss The Story Stupid [ITSS]
Heavy Metaphysical Metapsychical Mystery.
Read up on King Arthur before you view it
Lets get it right Kidees
Pre-dates the Matrix
The same title intros of Vertical Moving Letters a la "Ghost in he Shell"
End of story
Bon Apetite
PS: I'm glad it was never dubbed - the language I believe is Czech not Polish - and does it ever work.
Movie Review: What happened to the dog? (spoilers) Summary: 3 StarsThe movie is basically in 3 parts. 1) The introduction to the game - 5 stars; 2) The setup of the mission - 3 stars; 3) The execution of the mission - 1 star.
1) Great visuals, but for a movie made after 2000 I wondered why the computer interfaces were give an 70s look and feel.
2) Didn't understand the connection between the dog disappearing and the setup of the mission. Where did it go .. how did it get out of the apartment?
3) For the final part, I got the impression that the producers ran out of ideas and money. No great visuals, just a woman walking around a city trying to find someone who is an intruder. Does she find him .. we never find out? Plus the music score from the first part is repeated and takes up a large part of the 3rd part .. nothing new here.
The subtitles were well done .. the filming and special effects good, but too many unanswered questions leave the viewer hanging at the end.
Les.
Movie Review: dreamlike visuals Summary: 4 Starsdon't let the subtitles drive you off, there is very little dialog here & the story is told visually. the only thing that i don't like about it is that it's a shoot-em-up, but there is a thoughtful level as well & all in all a very interesting movie.
Movie Review: Another miss from Mamoru Summary: 1 StarsHere is another miss. I'm sorry but Mamoru is just not a good director. He's had more failures than Elizabeth Taylor has had marriages. Anyone going to watch this or any of his other movies expecting much will be sadly disappointed, he's just not a commercial. This movie drags and will bore the hell out of you like most of his endeavors. I recommend this and any other of his films for insomniacs. The only film I can actually recommend by him is Angels Egg, which is presented as an art film than a Sci-Fi blockbuster, if you think that's what you're getting here.
Movie Review: Buy it Just for the Music Summary: 4 StarsThis movie is a strange combination of mystical Japanese computer art with a brooding Polish mythology that no matter how creative and determined you are, your lives are controlled by others. An interesting story that has just enough clues to make it possible to follow, but with a few surprises and a few unanswered questions. But the best part of this movie is the music of Kenji Kawai that has a life of its own and will keep you rewinding the credits to hear it again and again. It appears that the Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra played much of the background music, and the quality is stunning. There is much to criticize in this film too, as there are too many unanswered questions left to the imagination of the viewer. When do we leave the game and reenter reality, or is reality the game, and Avalon is the only way to find a world worth exploring. And how can the main character go on for days without eating? Welcome to Avalon.
The DVD of the movie is cheaper than the CD of the movie music. Cant quite figure that out, but if you get it just for the music, it is well worth it. This is Kawai's best work and for me it makes the movie.
Summary of Avalon (2001) (Sub)Occupying a hazardous fantasy war zone located somewhere between David Cronenberg's eXistenZ and the Matrix trilogy, Mamoru Oshii's Avalon is a must-see entry in the subgenre of virtual-reality thrillers. Combining live-action set in a dystopian near future (filmed in Poland) and digital imagery set within a state-sponsored virtual combat game called Avalon, this sluggishly paced but visually dazzling film is another brain-teaser from the director of Ghost in the Shell. The action focuses on a maverick Avalon ace named Ash (played by the lovely Polish actress Malgorzata Foremniak) who advances to the game's highest and most mysterious level, "Class Real," a virtual world so authentically convincing that some--called "the Unreturned"--choose never to leave it. As with the Matrix trilogy, Avalon is more intriguing in premise than execution, filled with hushed tones and heavy-handed portent. Still, the amber-hued ruins of Oshii's virtual landscape are oddly alluring as a means of escape--a warning from Oshii, perhaps, that even the most exciting virtual reality is a trap that can prove deadly to those who fall into it willingly. --Jeff Shannon
