Movie Review: Interesting Dives On The "Andrea Doria"

This video is an account that was made in the mid-1980s documenting a series of dives on the "Andrea Doria" in an attempt to retrieve two safes and investigate the status of a watertight door that was rumored to have been removed and to have ultimately caused the "Doria's" demise.

Filmed over a month's time, divers led by Peter Gimbel retrieve the Purser's safe from the "Doria" (the other safe is still in the wreck) and penetrate further into the wreck than anyone else ever has. The video footage is fascinating as the divers explore the interior of the ship, which has largely been destroyed by three decades on the Atlantic floor. The divers take amazing risks in the investigation of the watertight door mystery, crawling around in ventilation shafts and ultimately discovering the actual hole in the hull made by the "Stockholm" from the inside. Ultimately they could not determine the status of the door, but could determine that it was irrelevant inasmuch as the "Stockholm" destroyed the bulkhead that the door passed through.

Some of the graphics are a bit dated, but if you would like to see inside the "Andrea Doria", this is still the best footage available, even though it is now almost twenty years old.
