Movie Review: Stinky Monkey
Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this video when my son was just over a year and a half old and he still enjoys it a year later! There is one part where it talks about monkeys having stinky bodily functions and he laughs hysterically every time screaming "Stinky monkey!" It's educational and fun so I don't feel like he's wasting his time in front of the TV. Would recommend it to anyone with a child who loves animals -- I don't think there's an age limit on this one.Movie Review: More Monkeys, Mama!

My 2 yr-old is obsessed with monkeys. He asks to see monkeys everyday. We read books and even took him to the zoo, but it is not enough. So although we don't let him watch TV, we broke down and bought this video to keep at Grandma's house. :) He loves it! It's the perfect length to keep him engaged. It's packed with live action footage of monkeys in their natural habitat, which is what he's fascinated by. The short cartoon bits are amusing and benign. Most importantly there are no boring humans, doing boring human stuff (like other videos we've tried). Just monkeys and apes and more monkeys! Exactly what the kid is craving to see.

This video does a good job of educating the viewer about the basic difference between monkeys and apes--the former has a tail, the latter doesn't--but goes on to use a lot of big words ("arboreal," "prehensile") that might be a little too Encyclopedia Britannica for younger viewers. Other videos in this series, such as Endangered Animals and Scary Animals have a quicker and more engaging pace. This one is long on dry facts and short on comic relief. The jokes often fall flat: "Monkeys don't talk the way we do, so how do they use the phone?" our addled animated narrator Henry the lizard asks. Still, for primate people, there's a lot of great pictures of monkeys swinging from the trees and apes cuddling their young, including fascinating footage of monkeys taking a steam bath in a hot spring surrounded by snow in Japan. --Valerie J.
