VHS Movie Reviews of 1962 World Series - New York vs San Francisco [VHS]

Movie Review: The greatest final out in World Series history
Summary: 4 Stars

There have been World Series that were decided in the final at bat of the seventh game with a dramatic home run (Bill Mazeroski in 1960) or hit (Luis Gonzales in 2001), but when it comes to the most dramatic out of all-time we are talking the 1962 Series between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants: Willie McCovey's screaming line drive was snared by second baseman Bobby Richardson with the tying run on third and winning run on second. The moment was immortalized by a couple of "Peanuts" cartoons where Charlie Brown utters the angusih cry, "Why couldn't McCovey have hit that ball three feet higher?"

Given that the Series came down to one out, a couple of key factors clearly tipped the odds towards the Yankees. The Giants had finished in a tie with their rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers, which meant winning another three game series just like in 1951. This meant that future Hall of Famer Juan Marichal could only start one game in the Series because he pitched the final playoff game, and after pitching four scoreless inning he had to leave the game after suffering a hand injury batting. Meanwhile, because there were three days of rain in the Bay Area between games 5 and 6, the Yankees were able to give both Whitey Ford (17-8) and Ralph Terry (23-12) three starts apiece. The result would be the 20th title for the Bronx Bombers in 25 World Series appearances in a 40-year span.

Ford won the opener with a complete game 6-2 victory and then Jack Sanford hurled a three-hit shutout to even the series at one game apiece. Although both teams reached double figures in hits in the first game, pitching dominated from then on and only once did either team get to 10 hits in one game again. In the 7th inning Willie McCovey hit a solo homer off of Terry (remember that for later). Back at Yankee Stadium, Bill Stafford had a shutout going thanks to a two run single in the 7th until two were out in the 9th when the Giants rally fell one run short. The Giants won Game 4 on the strength of the first World Series grand slam by a National Leaguer hit by Chuck Hiller. In Game 5 the Yankees took the lead in the Series for the third time as Terry got the win and rookie Tom Tresh hit a three run homer.

Back in San Francisco southpaw Billy Pierce, an ex-American Leaguer, gave up only three hits and won 5-2. This set up the big finale, where the Yankees score the game's only run in the 5th inning. Ralph Terry hurled a four-hit shutout but in the bottom of the 9th things got very interesting. Pinch-hitter Matty Alou led off with a bunt, and after two strikeouts he advanced to third when Willie Mays doubled (watch the play and make up your mind where Alou should have been sent and if Mays should have been given a single and took an extra base on the throw). Then McCovey hit his line drive, or, as Charlie Brown would ask, "Why couldn't McCovey have hit that ball TWO feet higher?" Terry, who had given up Mazeroski's home run in 1960, was named World Series MVP on the strength of his two victories and final game four-hit shut out.

Obviously this 39-minute video of 1962 World Series highlights is going to have more appeal to fans of the New York Yankees rather than those of the Giants, who can only watch that final out over and over again and shake their heads. Final Note: The oddest final out of all-time would be in the 1926 World Series when Babe Ruth was caught trying to steal second with the Yankees down by one run and Lou Gehrig at the plate. However, Ruth went on to redeem himself the following season. McCovey never played in another Fall Classic.
